Bordercollie we got that calve married up with another cow they are doing great thanks for the milk replacer info shared it with the big hat aka boss

Awesome King!! That is sure a good feeling!! :) :) .. That "o no mo" product is handy to have on hand should you ever need anything to help with the bond on young calves. Sometimes, it makes a difference but timing is everything. I just got in an hr ago and am pretty tired of cows right now... Congratulations on your good work getting them married up! collie!

Thanks guys we do use the potion sometimes if its needed just smear a patch on each and yup we smell alike you must be my mom.. Man we have not had a case of coccidiosis in years we doctored 2 yesterday and 4 today that stuff is bad news hope it doesn't spread and we get more you guys have any experience with it been treating it with sulfa I know there is some stuff you can add to water but they are out right now drinking from the creeks so that's not possible.

That's bad stuff King.. Out vet gave us a clear mix that you can give like 3 cc to (in the mouth) every day for a bit and it worked good. I think it started with an "A". We have also given the sulfa . As you say one can go for years and then have it pop up. We vaccinate against most everything and have given the nose spray and blackleg shots in Dec and then had a fine, stout 350 lb registered bull calf die from bl in January. Never had it before but they say the bl stuff is in the ground everywhere like tetanus. He fell over and that was it.. We gave the bl booster to the registered herd last week. A very expensive lesson on delaying boosters. collie

i like winter! I started a new hobby this weekend. I went snowshoing around my property. I bought a couple original wood snowshoes at a yard sale,,,then bought some military surplus snowshoes,,then bought my wife some modern ones,,,but never had time to try them out until this year. I have owned them all 3 or 4 years.

I can't believe how much fun it is! I guess it is more fun because i miss going out in the woods, and it is a struggle in boots to walk thru the drifts,,,but now i walk on top!

my dog sinks and struggles to keep up, so she walks behind me where i pack snow a little,,,then trips me when she steps on the shoes walking so close behind me.

With all the snow we've had this year, and the way it has lasted ...no sign of it going away, I could use a pair. Never seen any around here. I will keep an eye out just for the heck of it.

I know damn well that was not taken in Louisiana.

We don't have "Friendly" snakes !!!!

Mmmm... that is just not right! I need to take a switch to those "grown ups "-letting that keep going..

Wishing it was around here. Seems that even the "non-poison" ones will rear back and let you have it. Perhaps though, that child will find by the "patience" of the snake that they are something to treasure and take care of rather than just kill.

Our big momma LGD , livestock guard dog, got bit by a rattlesnake last summer. Face swolled up like a basketball when we found her staggering around. Got her to the vet, and yes, she turned out just fine; but was touch and go. Anyway, we never found that snake; but killed to Eastern Timber rattlers over the summer.
I hate to kill them for sure; but they kill the dogs and yes, do hit the goats for sure. Got the dogs vaccinated after this go round so that when they do get bit they can for sure be fixed up easily.
My wife for Christmas, got a snake tong and also one of those grabber things for snakes. In the past, we have taken king and rat snakes out of the pasture and put them up by the road or in the woods. The dogs try to kill them so we move them out when we see and hear the dogs doing "the snake dance". Now, with those tools we will catch a rattler and put it someplace VERY far away rather than sending it to a long nap.............God bless........Dennis

Kids tinkering with snakes like that is bad. They then think they can handle any snake like that which will come back to bite them (pun intended) sometime in the future.

So, back to weather, how are y'all down south doing with this storm that's hitting today?

Normal day (for this winter) here. About 17° right now and will be the high for today and down to -10° tonight. It's getting old. I don't like running both wood stoves but hate the electric furnace running even more. It hasn't kicked on in days despite 0° temps we've gotten.

yippee for wood heat!

i have burned 3% of my propane tank so far this year,,,which is 15 gallons,,lbs,,or whatever it is.

Been burning up the red oak wood.

Those poor people down south,,,,ice heading right for them, and 2 inches of snow made them all sleep in their cars on the last storm. I heard radio say they have been getting a lot of extra equip ready. Probly spending money on stuff they won't need for 10 more years, but what else to do?

I laugh at them for 2 inches of snow,,,and my friend in canada called me the other day and laughed at me for telling him we got enough snow to go snowshoeing and plow.

Thanks for asking Zoom. It is 1:15 p and I just came in for lunch..it says 32 degrees. Ice on the gates but not the ground. Cows are tired of it and so am I. Used a lot of lp ... a lots... The house has 16 ft ceilings and is a booger to heat although it stays cooler in summer. 5 fireplaces but all capped but one we use when someone will be in all day with it to watch (for sparks). House all old cypress from 1842 so very "tinder".
suppose to be in the 60's this weekend. collie

Sure hope you and your animals don't suffer too much through this weather Collie, when you aren't used to this and not prepared (no insult intended here) it can be really rough on you. There's no way to be prepared for these unknowns. I live in this situation and I still get caught at times.

Thank you BaiJiu. We have good clothing and are getting along ok.
The bil said water froze on the mantle when he was a kid in this old house. That was in the 1940's after the army seized the land around here to build munitions bunkers and officer club further down the road. His Daddy moved the house 50 ft with logs, turnstile and mules to get it off the section line of the seizure. It about fell apart but they lived in it till the late 60's and he redone it in the 90's with insulation.
Of course nobody had heat in every room back then. I remember seeing cold breath in our house when little. I am thankful for all things even the hard lessons- They make me a better person. Thank you and stay warm up there, collie

It's 9:00pm now. 31 degrees and cold wind. Temp is falling faster and faster.
It's freezing outside.
We went to town to eat. Come out and the truck is covered in Ice. Got home and waited until time to take LeRoux and Ellie outside. They did not want to go, but did. My feet are damn frozen now.
Both of them are now by the heaters. Mrs Two Guns is staying warm under her
old quilt blanket.

Have I mentioned my damn feet are frozen. Hurting. Damn this. This is suppose to be Louisiana, not the north slope of Alaska.
I want to go in the kitchen and get a bait of strawberries, pound cake and ice cream........ But my feet don't want to move. God, Let me make it to the heater. Maybe LeRoux and Ellie will feel sorry for me and let me put my feet up to the fire. OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH my feet are aching now, think I might make it, as long as I don't bump my toes on something. They would just break off like icicles......

This video might come in handy one day. I swear, thought I heard cars racing in the background ............This guy got this figured out. I am still laughing ....
But it looks like it works for him ....
