Yeah, the hotwire is only half of the circuit. I see so many shade tree mechanics trying to test a vehicles electrical system with a test light. They see the light up when they find a hot wire and think the complete circuit to the device is good. When I am working on vehicle electrics, I put my trusty Fluke 87 multimeter back in the toolbox and grab my old Simpson analog meter. Love that 50 year old meter.
 
Yes, bad grounds do strange things. Back in 2000 I had a new Mack CH and it would constantly get the lightning bolt symbol (electronic Malfunction light on dash) and loose power and many times just shut off and fire back up while driving down highway. back then no dealer could figure it out. They changed harnesses, ECM's etc. Finally had to just live with it.
Then after many years finally found out it was a bad mass ground point up be the A-pillar in the cab.
