Here's a "Talk About Anything" - II

Brrr. Cold enough for everyone? It got up to 10 degrees today. Low of 10 below zero tonight. Ditto for tomorrow.

I'm in my shop, warming it up so things don't freeze. I've moved all my chemicals, paints, pressure washers and other stuff into this warmed room.

I should probably check some of my vehicles to see if they start but they're under several inches of snow that fell last night. They can sit until I need them.

I'm about 100 miles south of you. We got up to 16 today. Single digits later tonight. No more snow thankfully. We have about 14 inches on the ground. I'm ready for spring!!!!! So READY.

I am south of you a few hundred miles. Last weekend, we got 7 inches of snow. It hung around all this past week and was finally melted by the 1.5" of rain we got Saturday. Woke up yesterday morning to an inch of fresh snow. Woke up this morning and it was 5F. It never got out of the teens today. Heading back down to single digits for the next two nights. Brrrrrr........ I don't even want to start my X1100......

15 below zero this morning. Supposed to be even colder tonight. :(
Had both wood stoves running. They kept the house OK I guess but I didn't want to run electric heat when it's this cold.

It was 13 here last night but getting above freezing today for a while so won't have to break ice on the water troughs. Glad we have mostly the insulated Richies near the barn.

Minus 40 up here last two days. Kubota's started no problem but it put my truck batteries to the test.

Had to leave my Cat wheel loader running overnight up at the mine. The first morning I cold started it and let it run for an hour and still couldn't move the hydraulics, LOL

Took me about 30 minutes to get the tractor running. Hydraulics took another 45 minutes of warming up.
I've got some sort of electrical ghost in the tractor so I have to jump start it every time. I'll pop a new battery in it next. After that, will look at starter and voltage regulator. Once the tractor did get running, I was getting over 16V. Bad voltage regulator?

Sounds like a bad voltage regulator to me. If it is a 12VDC system and it is charging @ over 16VDC, in my experience in the past, it was always the voltage regulator. Running over 16VDC has a tendency to melt headlight bulbs and tailight bulbs over a period of time.

Bil took this picture of the heifers following me as I was checking the water troughs day before yesterday during the extreme cold ( for here at least) . I joked that they just wanted to borrow my heated vest. ( which my niece gifted me for Christmas.) ( The jerseys in the crowd are future nurse cows.) The rye grass took a beating but is hanging on since we missed the snow.

I'm not an electrical expert but I'd also say there is a problem with regulator. But now why is it going dead? Would a bad regulator do that too or is battery pooched?

I've replaced both battery cables (the normal culprit). I'm going to make a new 2 gauge ground wire and put that in. The POS cable is new, OEM so it should be good. I'll test the battery at that time, replace if necessary.

I'm then going to do a thorough inspection of the wiring. Wondering if mice got at it. My headlights aren't working either.

If no-go after that, I'll do the voltage regular.

I ordered a new voltage regular and will install. Don't think that'll fix my no-start issue but it can't hurt.
May drain the wallet for a new battery (after getting it tested). Damn things are expensive nowadays. Bought one for a Mazda last week for... $150+ One thing I don't like is cheap batteries so I normally stick to Deka.

I hate buying John Deere parts, as they are so damn expensive. One thing I won't skimp on buying is buying John Deere agricultural batteries. Who ever makes Deeres batteries for them does it damn right. Most of my diesel equipment is John Deere. I replace they batteries on them about once every 10 years. They aren't dead after 10 years, but I can tell they are starting to get weak. Yeah, cheap batteries will leaving you sitting within a couple of years.

Mine isn't a big Deere. I have a local battery shop I go to and although a bit pricey, they take good care of me. They know me by name and offer me choices of "meh, it'll work" or "this is a great battery". I almost always go with the latter. I'm doing a mental count right now and know I have over 20 batteries in some sort of equipment or one of the spares laying around.

When buying the good batteries, I do get nearly 10 years on most.

I pulled the battery. Date is from 2021, volts are 12.8 so I figured that's not the problem.

Built a new 2 gauge ground wire, cleaned grounding surface and re-installed the battery with new cable.

Tractor fired right up.

EVERY SINGLE TIME (probably 4 or 5 times in the last 28 years) my tractor has failed electrically, it's been a bad battery cable/ground. Please keep that in mind if you have electric problems.

No idea why I was getting 16 volts the other day. I measured it today and it was spot on at 14.4 volts. I cancelled the order for the voltage regulator.
