First mow of the season

I think I plowed snow once or twice. Probably 4" each time.
Still too muddy here to mow. We got 4" of rain in the last week.
It's in the 50's here as well. Right now I'm doing some pressure washing. Mulch and planting later.

@ETF Did you look at this thread? He's having an ant problem. Maybe you have some insights.

Yes I saw it. I put out granules for grubs about 2 or 3 times a year on about an acre of the yard surrounding the house. I use a Scott's push broadcast spreader. It's hard work at my advanced age. The other 3 acres of yard I spray with SEVIN. That's a lot easier. I do it to keep the hogs out of the yard and it's been successful for the past three years. The ants on the other hand are just a constant battle. I can semi keep them under control by spraying but the pastures surrounding the house and yard are a fertile breeding ground.

Bump.
It's almost time for mowing again.
Speaking of grubs, the moles in my yard have torn up the place.
I bought this product to kill the grubs
I REALLY like the domyown site. They offer products cheaper than anywhere else. E.g. The insecticide is $90 on Amazon, $60 on their site.

Once I kill the grubs, do the moles move elsewhere or die from starvation?

I'll be mowing in a week or so.

I am procrastinating for my first mow. It's getting close but not there yet. But I'm going to be away on a cruise and figure if I mow grass will come back faster so hoping I can not mow at all until the 21st or 22nd. Wishful thinking maybe. Will keep you posted.

I've already mowed a few of times. The first couple were really just to mulch leaves. The last time was to knock down weeds. I can't get the yard sprayed because the wind has been blowing like crazy for weeks. I've probably missed the window for putting out pre-emergent but I'm waiting for the wind to drop and the rain to stop before applying herbicide. The yard is starting to green up so I need to get fertilizer out as well. I hate starting the year off behind. When that happens, it seems that I never catch up.

A T-storm just blew through and gave us a good amount of rain. I was thinking about going out and spreading either 46-0-0 or 19-19-19 on the lawn but more T-storms expected so I'll wait a couple days as I don't want it to wash away.

I only have enough weed killer for 30K sq/ft. I'll go out and get more tomorrow. Hate to do half of it then forget where I left off so that'll have to wait as well.

I think I'll just grab a beer, the ATV and lawn roller and go squash mole trails and try to get more bumps out of the lawn.

I got the mower running today. Aired up tires, took battery off charge and put in fresh fuel. She fired up after a bit of turning over. I mowed the area near our house fertalized by our dogs over the years. It will be most appreciated by our mini dachshund.
The rest of the yard can wait till later in the month.

I rolled the yard again. I'm old, I'm bored (so I did the neighbors too). I looked and I put 27 miles on the ATV just rolling the yards.

Finally, latest first mow ever for me. I knew I would be away for 10 days so I didn't mow on purpose, hoping the grass would not take off and grow as much. LOL Dumb. Didn't work. I should have mowed before leaving.
I did 3/4 of the mowing yesterday, then was rained out. Finished up today. I mowed it at 4 inches since it was so high. Will set to 3.5 and mow again in a few days. Then I should be back on track.

What height to you cut your grass to? I was either 3.25 or 3.5 last year. Can't remember which.

When I got my Kubota front mount mower years ago, I set the deck at 3". After my first couple of mows, I thought it might be just a tad low but the deck is such a pain in the butt to adjust I just left it there, Okay, I'm lazy. For close on 30 years I've always mowed with the deck set at 3" but the front mount seems to crop it a fraction lower than with the previous mowers.

I mow at 3".
Today is herbicide day. 25 gallon sprayer behind the ATV. Almost done but the wind picked up so taking a break.

I've love to see a pic of your set up. Are you using the same herbicide you mentioned in the other thread? What is your mixing ratio? Maybe start a new thread for this. Would be great info.

Our timing just sucks. I was using the sprayer this afternoon, just got done spraying, got everything cleaned up and put away, came to my computer and found this.

I have an AgSouth Scorpion 25 gallon tow-behind sprayer with hand wand. Similar to the pic below (but my tank is white). I pull it behind my ATV at around 4MPH (depending on what I'm spraying and how much chems I need per acre).

If/when this sprayer dies, my next will probably be a Fimco like this link.

Don't have time right now for a new thread.
If the herbicide in the other thread was Scythe, no, I don't use it in this spreader. Scythe kills EVERYTHING. The only place I'd need Scythe in a big sprayer is for stone driveways (and I only have one stone driveway). I'm afraid of wind drift carrying it over the lawn. I use a battery operated backpack sprayer with the Scythe for this task.

Remind me tomorrow and I'll give some reviews of herbicides that work (or don't), application techniques...
