First mow of the season

Finished up mowing my yard on Friday, April 7th. So first mow is under my belt and we are off into another mowing season.
I spent 34 bucks on 10 gallons of gas for mowing. Today same station gas is up to 3.69. I suppose we'll hit 4 bucks a gallon before memorial day when boating season starts.

On a related note, does anyone else still roll their lawn? I've done mine twice already. Haven't seen anyone else around here do it. I hate all those little bumps.

My yard could sure stand to be rolled. I lent out my roller and it never found it's way home. My memory sucks so I don't know who I lent it to. :bonk:
What size and weight roller do you use zoomer.

It's 3' wide and I think 24" tall so that's around 50 gallon, 400 pounds. I had a larger one but it pushed my ATV around too much on the hills. Almost took out the corner of the house once.

I haven't mowed the whole 4-acre yard yet but I have used the mower to mulch leaves and hit a few of the high spots. All told, I probably have mowed the whole yard but just not at one time. Going to get serious about it this coming week.

I'm surprised you're not mowing a lot earlier. Being in Texas, I'd have thought you would have started a couple months ago.

Yea, I usually start a few weeks earlier than this but the yard is mainly St Augustine which doesn't start growing until the temperature is consistently above 70° or even 80°. The temperature has been all over the place this year. Some days it is close to 80° and the next it is almost freezing. That doesn't stop the junk grass and the weeds from growing though. (n)

Bump. It's that time again.
I've rolled the yard twice. Once in Feb, the other a few days ago.
I mowed a little of the yard last week, just where it was high.
The whole lawn is now due but it's been raining/snowing for the last several days so it's too wet.

Thanks Brian. I've been meaning to update this thread.
Unfortunately I have yet to do the first mow of the season. I should have mowed before Easter. I was talked out of it so we could hide easter eggs for the kids better. That worked. We hid 200 eggs. So far 191 eggs have been found. Mower will most likely find some when I finally can mow. Way to wet and cold here to mow. I hope to mow this Monday the 8th if things have dried up some. Temps will be in the upper 60's and maybe even some sunshine. Woo hoo.

Made my first full mow last week. I'd done a couple of partials to hit the high spots and mulch leaves before that. My yard looks like hell. It's never recovered from being worked over by hogs a couple of years ago. It's all weeds and junk grass. I sprayed pre-emergent earlier in the year but it didn't seem to do much. I've sprayed a couple of times for bugs, mainly ants, and after mowing I sprayed for weeds. We'll see in a few days if it did any good.

A friend who also had his yard plowed over by hogs, is having his it hydro mulched. I can't wait to see that.

@ETF Did you look at this thread? He's having an ant problem. Maybe you have some insights.

Been a while since my last visit..Before I can mow my grass I'll have to do a bit of re-arranging in my shop. Get the snowblower off the tractor and strapped to its moving dolly. Back the trusty 2004 RTV900 out of the way. Pull the log splitter out of the way, roll out the zero turn, etc, etc. Should have built that shop twice the size. No rush to get the mower out however as the grass is still winter grey where you can see it now that it's poking through the snow. Though the winter has been rather wimpy by eastern Ontario Canada standards the spring has been slow in arriving. Didn't even bother to mount the blade on the RTV this year.

I put the blade on my tractor. Did not use it even once for snow. Not complaining.
However, I'm using it today to help spread some gravel. Then it comes off and bush hog takes it's place.
50 degree outside now. going up to 55. Sunny though so I'm planning to fire up the mower after I spread the gravel.
First mowing should be done today.
