Shell Tellus R22

Anyone know what Shell Tellus R22 is?

Looks and feels like hydraulic oil, but I'd like to know for sure before I dump it in my splitter.
Knowing the grade would be handy too.

Found a sealed drum of it, its got to be 20 years old maybe more. If its the right oil it'll save me £60. This hydraulic oil is expensive stuff!
 
Thanks Cali, thats pretty conclusive.

ISO 22 is a bit light sadly. Now the £60 question is, do I chance it and dump it in with a barrel of ISO 100 from a different supplier, or do I just not use it.
I'm leaning towards mixing it with a barrel of ISO 100.
 
After thinking about the Tellus variants I saw described - 'R' might mean its formulated for refrigeration compressors. They used similar prefixes for other specialized applications. But that's just a guess.

If you decide you can't use it for hydraulics, then maybe blend it (at low concentration) into your diesel fuel?
 
From what I have read in your links it seems all the Tellus oils are hydraulic oils, though as you say, the only reference to the R was to refrigeration oils.
It does look very much like hydraulic oil, so I think I'll give it a go.

I have been using hydraulic oil as a cutting lubricant, seems to work OK.
