Rtv900 help!!

New to the group here! Lots of useful info going around. Thanks for having me. I work in an ore mine up in northern mn. For getting around the plant they bought us a used 2004 rtv 900. Worked great. One day a co-worker was was driving it and said he had it full throttle going down a long hill. He said about 3/4 of the way down it locked up and came to a stop. Would not turn over at all. Towed it back to the plant and after hitting the key a few times it turns over but wouldn't fire. Pulled the valve cover off and found a bent pushrod. Well they didn't want to mess with it at all so they gave it to me!! Score!! (I think) . So now I have got it at home and would like some input on what to do next. Just replace the pushrod and see what happens? Not worth it to spend money on a rod? Just pull it and rebuild? Not worth putting any money into it? Any help would be appreciated. Would like to get it running if its worth it being it has a full cab, roof, windshield, heater. Good plowing rig. Again any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

We are in the middle of a rebuild but this is a great peice of work equipment. we love ours. we use it for light farm use and the only trouble we have had is the serpintine belt fell off, we thought it was the battery... and it over heated. i would say worth it

I would say worth it also. :thumb:

You got it for FREE!!! :wow: How many hours are on it?

Not to sure on hours as the hour meter is not working. Any ideas as to what I should try for the engine?

Update. After further investigation I found another bent pushrod. So I figured the worst and I decided to pull the head off and take a look. Well pulled the head and it looks fine. No damage to pistons no scoring on the cylinders. So what happened?!?!?! What should I do next? Just replace the pushrods and putnitall back together? Something else I should be looking at? Plz help.

I would check all the pushrods by rolling them on a nice formica countertop. Replace any with a bend and get a new gasket and put it back together. Most likely the valves were never adjusted and the over-revving down hill did them in. I would try to start it and run it a little then retorque the head and check the valve lash again. They are pretty tough motors if serviced regularly. You have a real find on your hands and there ain't much that can't be fixed with the knowledge on this board.

Sounds like a plan. I will be calling the nearest dealer tomorrow to try to get some. I did pull all the pushrods and rolled them. Two of them are very bent. The others looked ok? But I will just replace them all to be sure. Be nice if it fired right up :drive2: anyone know of a good place to get parts ? Online? And a service manual. Also is it correct to think that because of the 2 very bent rods it would not fire? I have been able to fire a gas engine with bent rods it just ran bad. This will not fire at all. But will hopefully be getting rods soon!

When you get it all back together. Make sure you have good quality fuel.
Go ahead and install youself a fresh fuel filter.

What does your oil look like ? How does the oil smell ?
After you get it running. I would change ALL the fluids in the machine.
That way, you know what you've got !!!!!

Coolant, how does it look ?

You have you something that is worth fixin up.

I'm sure it can use a full on service. If I can get it running I will be going through the whole machine and servicing everything. Should I be worried about maybe timing jumped on it? Should I be looking into that before I put it back together.?

welcome to the forum and lots luck with your new rtv. try to get some quiet time, a cup of hot joe, and a note pad--- then go back through the rtv forum threads and look for maintenance helps and hints. while it might take some time, it could save you some grief. lots of really good folks here that will give you help based on their experience with kubota equipment. Messicks.com is a good dealership located in pennsylvania you might want to consider for parts and other supplies. good luck

Neil Messick is the main reason why this RTV forum is here. So yes I would suggest them.
I'll 3rd that, plus if you click on the Messicks link at the bottom of all forum pages you support both Neil and Net Tractor Talk at the same time. When you click that ad and then buy from Neil he notes that the link came from NTT and credits us for that. Kewl huh? :D :thumb:

So I ordered 6 pushrods, a head gasket and a shop manual. I would assume the shop manual has torque specs for the head and also would be a handy tool for these machines. So I was tinkering around a little bit with it today and noticed that it has a wire that has came disconected. It looks like it goes to some kind of sensor right next to the oil filter. Without a book I would guess that it is some kind of oil pressure sensor or something? Anyone know for sure? And also when it was together it would not fire at all as I mentioned. Could that wire being disconected be telling it its not getting oil so stops it from running? Any input? Will be picking up the parts Friday so hope it fires up. Will keep everyone updated. Thanks for all the help thus far!!

Also, look at the fuel shut-off thingy !!!

Make sure it's operating proper.

Your shop manual will show you that part !!!

Hi troop welcome to the forum. That sensor is your oil pressure sensor. That's where the wire you had asked about in an earlier post goes. You'll get a light on your dash indicating no oil pressure, looks like a drop of oil. Should go off after you connect it and the motor is running.

So dropped new pushrods in the motor. Put a new head gasket in it and put it back together. No go. Didn't even try to fire. Same as before. Now something I noticed this time around is that when I have my wife turn the motor over so I can see what's going on it I put my hand by the intake hose. It is pushing air out. Put my hand by the exhaust pipe it is sucking air in. Has to be timing right!?!?!? I can't think of any other way this could be happening. Timing jumped a 180 or cose to it? Needless to say I will be pulling the motor. Or at least the gear case. Any input would be helpful. Thanks.

When you had the head off did you crank the motor over? I have never tore mine down but you could have a twisted crank where it is actually 2 pieces or you have the cam shaft gears 180 out. I believe they use gears and not a belt. Would have to look at a parts book to know for sure. Now you have me thinking about this.
