RTV 900 clunk sound - won't start

I would disconnect the cables to the starter then connect a jumper from the battery+ directly to the starter +.
Just tap the battery post connection to see if the engine spins. Make certain the battery - post has a good connection to the engine block.

Aside from rodents chewing on the wires I had very few electrical issues with my 2006 RTV900

I am pretty sure it's a safety switch. He took battery to dealer and it tested good. He neglected to ask what might be wrong. Ugh. I tried to test the safety switch by transmission, but I am not skilled with ohms meter. If it weren't 15⁰ out or if we had a heated garage, or even a garage haha, I would keeping trying as per the service manual. But it's parked outside and it's hard to work on it with gloves. Plus, I am at my wit's end and crabby. ? Maybe I'll try again tomorrow.

That's the spirit !!!! Never give up !!! Tomorrow is another day and may be warmer even !!! :) Down here in MS it's so wet that the cows are making deep prints in the muddy pastures .
There is a way to jump the neutral safety switch posted in one or more of the many threads on here . Do a search for neutral safety switch if that the one you are talking about. I 'm not sure about it being that neutral switch but maybe someone will chime in with more thoughts on this clunk noise. Curious one more question... Did the old starter make the same noise?

Old starter same noise. I don't think the starter is even engaging. It's not the neutral switch because if in gear, no click at all. Out of gear, dash lights come on and I can hear the glow plugs click off.

There is a safety switch on top if the trans. The book says to take the leads apart and test for ohms in and out of gear. I got nothing either way, but I am not sure I had the tester deals stuck in good. Hard to hold it all at once.

There is also a fuel cutoff safety switch by the solenoid, but I don't think that's at play since I can't get the engine to turn over. But hey, I'm no mechanic!

I did see a post in another forum where a guy rigged up a starter assist relay bypass and posted diagrams.

I hope it's okay to post this link, because I think this may be my problem.

This just came to me. Not a RTV but on my son's car.

On his car, after reviewing all the obvious that's already been addressed/discussed here, I grabbed a hammer and gave the starter a good tap. Be careful not to hit it too hard as to break the housing.

I had my son in the car, key on and in the start position. After the 2nd tap of the hammer, it started right up. I've since replaced the starter.

Might be something worth a try. If you don't have another person, hit the starter with a hammer then go try to start it. Repeat a few times to see if anything happens.

If it does start, you're good for a short period of time (that's up to the starter to decide whether it's hours, days, weeks...) but you now know your starter is on the way out and should be replaced.

I will report back if I learn the solution or if I win Mega Millions tonight after which I will post a photo of my new Kubota.
Glad you posted about the Mega Millions. I only play once every couple years but did have tickets for this drawing. I was mistaken on the dates and thought it was drawn Thursday night. When I looked at my numbers Friday morning, no winners so I threw away the ticket. Your post got me to drag it out of the trash. Checked this morning, nothing. :(

I've never noticed a safety switch on top of the engine except for the neutral safety switch. I would suggest what BCZoom said to do. with the light tap. It may just be stuck from storage.. sometimes they are that way from the factory. If you go back to the dealership, maybe get them to test it too. I know it's a pain..

Solved!!! After I replaced the ring connectors that attach two wires to the positive battery termimal, the glow plugs stopped working. I didn't win the lottery so I gave it a good kick and told my man to get it out of my sight.

He called the dealer back and they said they would pick it up to take a look for $20. (I started to get happy.) Sunday we towed it from my place to my man's place a mile away with the tractor and chain.

They took it in yesterday afternoon and it was fixed by 11 a.m. today. Well, we were all wrong somehow, because the problem was WATER! Mechanic took off intake hose and a quart of watet came out. He advance the motor til all water out, cleaned off glow plug, and she started right up! He changed the oil and filter and bent intake behind the box, cuz apparently the box must have dislodged the hose when box was raised sometime. I attached his narrative and whay it cost us. Well, that and $75 for the new starter we didn't heed after all, but we are not complaining!

Thanks all!20210126_130446.jpg

Wow. Interesting. Any idea how the water got in there?
Seems like a good dealership and a more than fair price for all they did. Congrats.
Thanks for the follow up. :tiphat:

We think an air intake hose must have been loose or dislodged up top where the air cleaner is and didn't notice. Looks like they replaced the hose clamps. It was sounding a little rough lately, but now it purrs. We bought it used in 2017 from same dealer. It had been used by a school district for plowing snow. I am glad we got it fixed, but I was hoping we'd get a slightly newer model. Oh well.

Thats wonderful news !!!! :thewave: Thank you for letting us know about the solution. :) If I remember right, that little box where the air intake goes has a little tiny drain hole in the bottom of it. Maybe see if it does and keep an eye on it . So grateful it didn't cause big problems . Real nice dealer there for sure and we need more like that !!!
