Ramsey or Warn? Are 2nd string worth considering?

I'm a big fan of Ramsey and Warn winches. I run both and have had no real problems with either. I did have a wireless remote with the Ramsey but I was probably beyond the expected range for wireless control.

Mechanical brakes are key for those lifting or pulling loads and want to keep them in place (without them drifting back down). This isn't standard equipment and must be ordered or installed beyond what you get off the rack.

I have a SuperWinch on an ATV but never put myself in a position to need (and therefore trust) it.

Spare straps, snatch-blocks and other winch accessories should be mandatory carry equipment. What do you carry?
 
I dont have any experience with Ramsey winches but i have had experience with warn. I currently have a new warn XT30 winch with synthetic rope and a wireless remote. I can honestly say that this is a great winch it has gotten me out of a few sticky situations. I would recommend however if you are going to get a warn winch go ahead and get the XT/RT 40 because the RTV is almost the heaviest UTV on the market and if some people are putting a 4000 pound winch on a 1200 pound machine then I think it should be necessary to have at least 4000 pounds of winch power. I am not saying however that the 3000 will not work. I have the entire OEM steel cab with glass windshield on my 06 RTV 900 and with everything i have on it it is weighing it at around 2100 pounds empty. Warn is great and i strongly recommend them.
 
I use Warn on all my offroas jeeps. I like Ramsey also but I see way too many plugs go bad on them. but over all the most issues come form just general lack of maintenace from what I have seen. Both manufactures are well respected companies.

I also reccomend using a synthetic line over a steel cable any day. When properly rated it is the best. Lighting and easier to handle. Field repairable if it does break. Steel cable will break too. The synthetic line is much safer to work around. It will drop straight to the ground if it s overloaded and breaks. It does not store energy like the steel cable will and snap back to the towing points. But you should alwyas exercise a safety zone and use a winch weight.

Other thigns I carry are: 10' heavy duty tree saver, tow straps (with no hooks), 1" dowell rod to put two straps together, assorted d-rings, grade 70 chain (which is only used for vehicle recovery of a rollover so the straps do not get cut). Snatch blocks to change direction of pulls or to double the pull strength.

Bags to put all the stuff in.

Folks need to remember, the winch needs to be run. A electric winch sitting up is like a old barn not being used. It will crumble.....
Usally, if we are not using a winch. We still run the line out, and run it back in to work the winch and keep it in order !!

I have a Ramsey 5000 on my 2007 Kubota UTV and it has worked just fine the few times that I have used it. For the money, it was definately the best buy for the most power.
