Radio extended play time "Electronics advice needed"

Ok guys,, Not even sure how to word this but I will try.
The radio/cd in the x1100c shuts off when you turn off the key.
(as it should) ?? Well ''
HOW can a guy make the radio continue to play for say 10 to 15 mins with the key off .
Without wiring strait to the battery and risking leaving it on and running down the battery >?

If your just sitting or working and want to listen to the radio ,. you must turn on the key.,. That runs the hour meter up.
not to mention the rest of the devices drawing power..

You know ,,, like in an automobile . Turn off key, radio plays for 15 min unless you open the door.

This will only be possible via some sort of electrical timer circuit connected via fused link to the battery. You may be able to find a variable timer circuit on Ebay for this purpose.

I wonder if it would be easier to wire the hour meter so that it only runs when the engine is running? I know it's possible but do not know how to get er done.

Doc, it would be possible but it would have to be controlled via some sort of signal activation from the motor to know when it is started. I suppose a relay circuit connected to the Alternator output may be an option. It may be a little more difficult in the 1100C as the hour meter is integrated into the dash display.

Hmm you guys are very helpful !
Be interesting to prevent the hour meter from racking up Unless the motor is running as Mork mentioned .

The Home automation timer looks like a good option..
The Amazon one looks to fancy. .. Hm I see smoke coming out my ears I am thinking so hard.

A lot of engine meters only add hours when you have oil pressure. Possibly tee a switch in with the oil pressure sender.

I just purchased a X1100C and am disappointed that the radio is only operable with the key on. It is interesting that the Jensen radio that came with the machine has a program that the user can activate which will automatically turn the radio off if it is left on too long and the battery voltage drops to something like 10.8 volts. This is an ingenious solution but not a help if you have to have the ignition on. I am going to figure out how to rewire the power to the radio so that there is power to it all the time. If anyone has some ideas I'd love to converse! My X1100C is a work vehicle and I'd love to be able to work along side of it with the radio on.

What is the model number of the Jenson stereo? With that we can find the wiring diagram recommended by the manufacturer. That would make it work as you want.

Thanks Doc! It is a Jensen JHD1130. I just need to pull the radio out and see if there is by chance an always "hot" wire with a 10 amp fuse circuit. I just may have to bring one up from underneath. With the nice feature of the radio monitoring the battery voltage makes this a "safe" way to have the radio capable of being on without the key on. I've looked at the power to the front and rear work lights and all the wires there are key switched so nothing is available that I can see.

One of the wires going to the ignition has to be always hot.
I don't blame ya. I'd take advantage of that feature also.

Here is the wiring info:

Link to online manual I got it from, available for download.

Thank you Doc. I have this manual and found where I need to make the connection. My problem is trying to find a fused source of 10 amps that I can tap into to bring non-ignition power to the radio. Up in the headliner I have not found such a source of power. Everything I've found up there is dependent on the ignition switch. I haven't had time yet to investigate further. When I do make the change I will post.

I would LOVE for my radio to have that extented run time feature .. Turn off key radio plays for 15 min then off ..
Like my GMC Truck .. some day some day !
HBTexas, I am no electrical expert by any means, but I believe they make a 12V time delay relay that could be fabricobled to do something very similar. It would allow 12V power to stay on for a set period of time after the key is turned off and then would trip to disconnect power until the next key cycle. It would probably take a few additional wires but seems doable. May be more than you want to deal with but sounds like a fun project if you're into custom modifications.

I just tried my horn, it works with the key off. If you are set up with blinkers and horn that might be a way for you to get a hot wire.

That circuit and the 12V utility are both "hot" without the key so I am hoping I can use one of those circuits. I like the unit that HBTexas mentioned above and would consider that if the radio already didn't have the battery sensor to turn it off. Interesting unit. There are a few unused fuse spaces on both fuse blocks so I can always run a wire directly from there - fishing the wire is a bit problematic.
