parking brake handle set screw

2014 rtv-x900 parking brake handle set screw is missing. I already looked on the floor. Took the handle off and it looks a little diff. setup than normal. If I hold down on the handle it works but it's a pita. I have manuals out the you know but not a parts manual. Yes I can call the dealer and be on the phone forever but if I already have the part number. Thanks for any help.

If you go to Messick's web site, the parts manuals are available online so you should be able to get the part # there.

I had the same thing happen to my 2014 x900. I got real lucky a couple of days later. I found the screw in the floor board, before I had a chance to get another one. I put it back in, tightened it good, and have not had a problem with it since. It's probably been a couple of years now.

Thanks for the replies. Messick's shows part names, no pics, but I don't see the part listed I need. I will just call the dealer and wait.

Don't forget a drop of blue locktite before you install the new one.

I like to keep my grand daughter involved. I have run to the house, get her favorite color of nailpolish and then apply a drop on the threads as she puts it back in.........works every time.........

Here's the diagram for the brake handle assembly. If you tell me which # it is, I'll give you the part # and Messick's price.

Edit to add: To see the parts diagrams on Messick's site, you need to register on their site. It's quick and also handy for when you do order parts.

bczoom, your diagram shows 010 handle but not the set screw that holds it on. 020 is the bolt that holds it to the body. Dealer called while I was typing said the set screw was number 017 which is not on your diagram. Dealer also said $10.00 for the part. The price you pay for quality. Why did it fall out in the first place?? I think I will drill thru and install a bolt for $10.00.

The dealer had a flat head,1/2 inch long, self tapping screw #K7591-40040. Sure not what I expected. Dealer wanted $10.00, I said no and walked out. I did find it on the net for $4.00. Think I will hunt thru my screw assortment. Hope the pdf comes thru. 017 is the part

Yea, $10 for that little screw is a bit much (A ripoff).

I'd be checking my stock or a hardware store first...

I also lost the set screw from my 1140 and not it is part number 017. $10 seems a lot for a small set screw. Does anyone know what a generic screw size would be to fit the handle? As the set screw is lost I cannot try to match to regular hardware store offerings but for such a minor item it would not seem to be a custom made or milled item.

Messick's has it for under $5. Still a lot but not the $10 your dealer wants.

An internet search shows other sites selling for under $4. Here's an example.

I'm not mentally seeing the screw in question and my RTV isn't nearby. Does it just go through a piece of metal then sets into a piece of plastic? If so, and yours fell out, I'm wondering if using the same size will hold properly (if the plastic is reamed out). I'd be going through my screw supply and/or going to a hardware store and getting something close but slightly larger.

The plastic T handle slides over the metal shaft and the set screw goes in the plastic and I believe just tightens against the metal shaft to keep the handle from moving up and down. Here is a picture of the part from Messick's link when searching for the part number. It is quite small and seemingly should be available at hardware stores. Probably worth getting a couple and using a thread lock agent as others have mentioned.

I agree. Just take the T handle to the nearest hdw store & fit it up.

I took the set screw out of mine and took some pictures with a ruler. I counted 7 threads per 3/8 of an inch.
