OT Log Splitter

I ran the splitter yesterday at 3/4 throttle and timed the cycle with a stopwatch. it took the ram 6.5 seconds to travel one stroke no load.

I hope it works as well for you as my HF splitter has for me. I've had a 24 ton HF machine for over 10 years I think. It always starts, no matter how much I abuse it by letting gas sit in it. I don't like the horizontal-only machines though. Mine can be run horizontal or vertical and I never run it horizontally. I can't see why I would want to lift the logs up onto the splitter. We burn cottonwood, which can be VERY difficult to split and can be up to 3 feet or so in diameter. I've used my tractor to maneuver giant bolts of wood into the splitter and it doesn't hesitate. I even cut gnarly pieces crosswise sometimes.

I've got the HF 20 Ton splitter and it works very well... the bi-directional operation really speeds things up.

The DOWNSIDE is that the end of the ram toward the engine is OPEN to debris/wood-chips entering the ram housing during operations. This might increase the chances of damage to the ram oil seals.

And the oil seals are the BIG PROBLEM... they are totally UNAVAILABLE and proprietary. They cannot be serviced and HF will not supply them to you. The local hydraulic rebuilder cannot do it either as the disassembly is virtually impossible and the seals are extrusions...not simple O-rings.
When that ram dies... you will either have to Gerry-rig some different ram (and that will not be easy due to the way it's contained in that bi-directional operation)… or Toss the log splitter away. :badidea:
