NorCal Newbie with first tractor.

Hey gang,
I just wanted to introduce myself....and my 12 year old daughter. We just recently sold our '48 Dodge Custom D24 that she and I'd gotten back on the road. Anyway, we needed a tractor to make our property more fire safe before the fire season gets underway full steam...and we've already had 1 fire fairly close to our property. So, we figured it was best to sell the '48 and get a tractor for some brush clearing, making some fire breaks, etc. I done some research....looking on Craigs list and found an '86 Yanmar 240D. The wife of the original owners wife is selling it as he had passed away about 9 months ago. Anyway, it's got 492 hours on the clock...and she says that those are accurate and that he hadn't used it much since he purchased it..but I suspect the clock been around at least once. It's got a loader on it, comes with mower, box with rippers & rops. And except for the paint being a bit faded and a couple of hoses looking like they need replacing, the tractor looks pretty new. The tractors about 50 miles away and I'm having it brought to our house this Friday......man, I'm looking forward to having something other than our Craftsman lawn tractor to work with cause we've been beating the crap out of it for 4 years now and although it's nearly as strong as the day my wife got it for me, it still won't climb into the thick stuff on our acreage. So anyway, hi to all and we look forward to being part of this forum. Oh, and the avitar in our profile is of our '48 Dodge. We hope to find a lot of valueable info here.

That 240D is an excellent tractor.

Hey Jim, Ohio & Mark......thanks for the welcome. Hey Mark....man, your all over the place. Well, I'm hoping to read all the archives here, and new posts as well cause as Mark knows....I'm a newbie to the whole tractor thing....but willing to learn and just waitin' on my new old tractor!!
 
Welcome! Just joined here myself a few days ago after spending almost two years on another tractor forum. I thought it was all there was! Then I found this great place! Once again, welcome!

Welcome aboard! Yeah Mark's amazing, he shares generously all over the place!

I have a YM240. (not 'D', it is just 2wd). And I'm 120-some miles west of you, on the way to Bodega Bay if you are familiar with the apple orchards over here.

I've had mine about 4.5 years so I can probably answer a few questions. It hasn't needed anything since I bought it, aside from maintenance and occasionaly replacing a loader hose I tear off trying to rassel downed trees without cutting them up first.

But I wish it looked as good as it runs. Today I put some photos over in the Tractor Detailing thread. I wish previous owners had parked it indoors.

Take a look at the Yanmar sales brochures referenced from my sig line. (Green, below.) These things are amazing. Indestructible, and fully supported by both Yanmar-USA and the gray-market dealers who have NAPA-quality replica parts.

This was the Yanmar model widely in use here when Deere made the decision to have Yanmar build compacts for them. I like to think YM240 was so good that Deere decided they would get better quality by contracting Yanmar, compared to designing a compact themselves, after looking at these. How's that for impressive quality.

You made a good choice.

I forget the gent's name that shared all of the great information about the appropriate battery for your YM240D. I believe he lives in CALIFORNIA, and owns a Yanmar in CALIFORNIA, and...oh yeah, has an apple orchard in CALIFORNIA! :starbucks:

On a more serious note...I've been caught between towns and fire breaks watching the helicopters dipping and dumping water. You know we're in trouble when they run the boaride bombers during all daylight hours. Be careful out there.

I've been watching the fires in Ca. Last I heard there were around 800 burning. WOW!:eek: Good luck with your fire breaks. And your tractor.

Between Mark777 and California we have a wealth of Yanmar knowledge right here so don't be afraid to ask about anything.
And like others said we like pictures.
That 48 Dodge looks good, some more & bigger pics of that would be nice. :D

Hey Guys and Gal....rather than continue to thank everyone separately for their welcoming to the site....I thought I do a group " thank you "....to all of you. I've already begun to read everything I can here and am slowly learning more about the tractor, YM 240D, that I don't quite have yet....but tomorrow!!! Wooohoooo!
Hey California....good to know you've got nearly the same tractor....cause I will definitely have some questions. Bodega Bay....heard of it, but can't say that I have ever been. We've only been up here since Jan 2002....and my wife say's that we haven't explored the northern Calif area enough...she could be right. But, I hope she understands that I'll be having to explore the northern parts of our propery when I get the tractor. Heck, I might like that part of the property more than the piece our house sits on and build me a little getaway out there! She may not see me for a week...naw, that'll never happen.
I had an inquiry here about pics of the '48 Dodge, so I've listed a link to my photobucket pics. And as soon as I get the tractor off of the trailer tomorrow, I'll take some pics before I clean her up...then more as I progress. Again, thank you all for your warm welcomes......my daughter loves the site too.
