new to having a narrow machine

I'm new here and new to the smaller asian made tractors like the one I bought this year. Yeah, I feel like a greenhorn again. More horsepower in a smaller package is a big adjustment.

Welcome to NTT rj! :thumb:
yeah, tell us what one you got. We have a few Yanmar owners very active here.

RJ, welcome aboard! What did you buy?

Do you have any pictures?

I'm a Yanmar owner. The previous owner widened it by using Kubota rims and larger tires. I think the added width is essential for my sloping orchard.

Especially after I read somewhere "The place I worked had one of those with forks on the front. Every year or two I would look out the window and see it flopped on its side where the operator tried to lift an uneven load." After I read that, I bought a ROPS!

I think the high hp/weight is because these are used in Japan primarily to power a tiller, and pto horsepower is all that matters. The rest of the tractor just has to be big enough to lift the tiller.

Even with my oversize tires, which are loaded with water, this tractor isn't a good match for my disc. It runs out of traction long before it would bog down. But discing isn't its main use, that was just something I tried to see how it would do.

Thanka for the warm reception fellas.
I got a 28hp mitsubishi this season. When I first saw it I thought it was on the slight side because of its narrow stature until I opened the hood. It has a BOOMER of a 4cyl diesel saddled under the hood. I can hawg grass as tall I am with a 5ft cutter, pull a 4ft disc, turn a 5ft finish mower....... its a lot more machine than I expected. 18 forward speeds, 4 pto speeds, 4wd. Yeah, 18 forward gears.
But it is a scary kind of narrow. I came off of a 1940's ford 9n I used for 6 years. I'd like to find a way to span my rear tires to the width of my old 9n. I thought about machining wheel spacers, using kubota rims and r4 tires like California was talking about.... anything to keep it from ending up on top of me. I already flipped the rear tires but that only gave me 8 inches of width.
I dont have any pics of it yet. As soon as I get it back together from performing my latest mechanical miracle, I'll post pics. Is it possible to post video on this site? If so, I'll video this tractor doing some wicked unreal hard work.

Most tractors you take the rear wheels off and switch sides w/ the lugs still pointing the right way and that will extend them out a few inches. This is due to the wheel center not being in line w/ the tire center. Makes quite a difference in stability. I think they're shipped that way so they can stuff more in each shipping container.
HTH,
Mike

You probably checked this already, but if you have rims with separate discs be sure both the rims and the discs are dished outward.

I had a 17hp Mitsubishi diesel. Awesome little tractor. The mower deck was used up when I got the tractor. It was a workhorse for me. Much like you I had an old Ford 8N before the Mitsubishi. Wished I could have kept the old ford just for playing around. I had to sell it to move on up though.

Yeah, I already switched the rear rims to gain a little width. But the pucker factor is still pretty high on a slope. I thought about spacers but that adds another shear point to my lug bolts. Kinda cautious about that option. I guess finding kubota rims with my bolt pattern is my next step.
I'll post vids on youtube and link them here after my stuff goes back together and I have to hide my tractor in some 7ft tall grass!
thanka fellas!
