MF20 PTO question.

73MF20

New member
New here. I am hoping someone here can help me. I am replacing the seal and o-ring on the PTO shaft that has been leaking slowly for years.

Near as I can tell by the serial numbers it is a 1973 MF20 (yellow) w/6 speed manual shuttle tranny and a 'live' PTO (either engine or ground driven)

The only manual I have says that after removing the 3 seal retaining plate capscrews and plate, I can withdraw the PTO shaft and seal retainer assembly.

I managed to remove the seal retainer assembly but the shaft will not come out. Should the shaft be free to remove? or is something wrong inside?

The shaft turns freely with what feels like about .010" end play and smooth turning like the bearings are good.

Is the rear bearing a press fit in the case? Or, can I just install a new seal and o-ring and re-assemble without removing the shaft?

Any tricks/experience welcome.

Thanks, Dave

Welcome to the forum. I assume you're talking about a TO-20 model.
I had one of those years ago. Solid tractor although they do like to leak here and there. My newer tractor is no different. I just live with the leaks (and put cardboard under it to try and keep the concrete clean).
Truth be told, I'm too old and rusty to remember the ins-and-outs for this.
We may have other members chime in that have a fresher perspective and I don't want you to leave our forum but the members at this forum are great and I'm sure they have several discussions on the matter.

Thanks, but this is not a TO-20 (I had a TO-30 for many years). It's an MF20 with a MF32 loader on it and painted bright yellow - I think it's a 1973 vintage. I understand they called it an "industrial" and is very similar to the MF135 agricultural - same Perkins 3 cylinder gas engine and a lot of parts are interchangeable with the 135.
I agree about old tractors and small drips, but I have about 15 acres of pasture I mow 2-3 times a year with a 5' rotary mower and typically go thru at least a gallon of hydraulic oil each time I mow (about a 5 gallon pail/year) - it adds up and for the 8-10 bucks for a seal and o-ring I decided it was time to get around to it :).

Gotcha.
Take a look at this thread. It doesn't specifically mention the MF20 but it may be the resolution you're looking for.

Wow, great thread, thank you! The pictures and description exactly match mine. I was afraid to damage anything internally - now that I know the shaft and bearing should come out, I will put some more effort into pulling it. Never thought about using a drive shaft to pull with - or may even set up a slide hammer somehow.
Anyway at least I have a direction to move in now, thanks again!

You're quite welcome. Not my info/thread but I like the guys at the link provided and they're good with old iron.
Please post back here and let us know how it goes/went. ;)

Just a follow-up. Put a 5/16" bolt through the output shaft hole and used a prybar against a wooden block I held against the casing and it popped right out. Now just waiting for the new seal to get here. Thanks for the help.
