What’s as important as knowing how to tie a knot…. is to know when and where and why a particular knot is used.
For example, the sheepshank is used to shorten a rope without cutting it, (i.e., temporarily shorten a rope.)
Cow hitch (girth hitch) is used to temporarily tie a rope to a post. A Clove hitch also, except is quicker to apply if the end of the post is near….and, for example to quickly secure the middle of a long rope which to a post.
