Its u joint time again

Collie just the one side as the other side was still in great shape.I was going to do both just because it was apart but only had 1 spare joint here and no one had any in stock.Ill order another 4 to keep in my stock to keep on hand.Under normal work they last but tugging dads car out of snow banks and snatching 50 foot logs put more strain on them than they can tolerate some times lol.

I'll see if I can come up with the Neapco part # and what we did to make it work.

Precision brand U-joints should never be used for anything other than paper weights.

if you come up with the part number and thay are stronger ill give it a try the next time i break one or wear one out.Under normal use precisions will probably work for a long time but i do expect way to much out of my Kubota.I got it for working hard not sitting in the garage to look pretty

I dont remember which joints we used now, and the RTV is tucked in between my plow and second truck. If you have the precision number I can cross it over.

Also, are we all talking about the same joints? Prop shaft for the front diff? Or axle shafts?

The 397 crosses to a 1-1606 Neapco. The 392 Crosses to a 1-0028 Neapco. I'll pull one of each off the shelf and look at the country of Origin.

what is the quality difference between the precision brand and the Neapco brand just out of curiousity

It doesn't get much worse than precision in the U-joint world.

Neapco is hard to break down. They have several lines of U-joints. They have some economy garbage like the PDQ line and Brute Force line commonly found and Auto Parts chains like Advanced auto. They are an OEM supplier for Mack and Polaris as well as a few others.

Bottom line, there "silver line" joints which are in a Black and Silver box are every bit as good as Spicer's greaseable joints.

The only caveat is some of the odd ball joints for foreign and obscure applications like this may be a el cheapo chinese joint or some other brands rebox. Which is why I want to pull em off the shelf and have a look. maybe tomorrow.

Mark,

Just a thought, but has anyone tired the latest u-joints from Kubota.

Although expensive, I'm assuming, are they not now upgraded from the older versions?

People with newer machines are not reporting as many issues or it seems that way on this forum.

Could you have some other misalignment causing you grief?

Food for thought.

I personally dont think its a joint quality issue per say.I think it is mor of the extreem angle issue of the shaft.I believe on the new models with the changes the angle is much less that dosnt cause so much strain. But also remember mine is a 2005 and i put my machine through extreems most dont.So with replacing 3 joints since 2005 isnt bad considering. As always some joints can and will fail even on automobiles. With a very heavy load on the back the angle is a lot less severe so IMO it actually relieves angle stress. The only time Ive killed them is the snatching and tugging from trying to get dads car out of the snow bank or pulling 50 foot logs and tugging on them to get them moving. You go from a spinning rolling position to a sudden stop it puts tons of pressure on them and eventually something is going to wear or snap. But like I stated I bought the machine for work work and more work.It is probably relieved when i just play on it or trail ride lol.IM not sure how the others work their machine causing the wear .I know Collie works hers to death along with a few others but I think mine is used like a dozer or skidder a lot lol.It rides nice like it is but i didnt buy a cadillac.I would have really thought for what the machine is and what it is used for it would have had a straight axle like a lot of quads have and a locking front differential but it is what it is and i knew this when i purchased it.All in all im not even close to being unhappy with it and im glad i bought it.It has saved me a tone of work and saved my back.Having Multiple Sclerosis it is also my wheel chair for the woors also. Its hauled anything from wood to horse poop to deer to kids to garbage to leaves to logs. You name it Ive hauled it.I even tried to haul multiple things in it.One time i loaded it half full with horse poop and a few liberals and the damn poop jumped out.It wanted no part of the other load lol.

Mark, You are a hoot ! haha , I had a lot of work to do today , needed a lift ,so came back and read your post again. Your machine has been really faithful... as has mine. I am glad too because we depend on them to do what must be done every day. I wish you the best and as always, keep looking up. collie

Thanks Hun Glad i can keep a smile on your face. And yes I wouldnt know what to do without it.Some jobs are fun others arnt .Last night had to hook up to the neighbors barn doors and tear them off due to being frozen to try to help a downed horse.Unfortunatly we had to put it down.It slipped and fell and broke its back.Wasnt a fun night

Need help with replacing rear u joints in my 2006 RTV 900 I just picked. I have read a lot about this on the forum and even watched a few you tube videos. Anybody have the a step by step procedure for removing and replacing the u joints. It appears that the u joints tore up the shaft ends when they snapped. Probably looking at replacing the entire axle shaft now. Any ideas on a good aftermarket drive? The other side looks like the units have play in them and I will only need the u joints for them. What u joints will work for the other side besides the kubota replacements?

You guys talking about the u joints on driveshaft that goes from tranny to front axle? Or ones on the rear axle ? I have an 05 model and driveshaft u joints are beginning to rattle. Guess I better get ready '

Hi Terry, I am talking about the ujoints going from the transmission outward to the rear wheels. There are 2 on each side. Just take a look at the " rear ujoints needed again" thread to see what I had to do to mine.
The drive shaft is a pretty easy job.Yea the original design.. well.., it rattles- There is an updated single shaft to replace the 2 old styles which are connected under there by a carrier bearing- but it is expensive at the beginning- but holds up much longer and eliminates the carrier bearing. There is a thread on that too. :) collie
