Insurance

BTW, if your RTV or similar equipment is to "maintain the resident premises", it's normally covered under your homeowners. That's how my tractors, ZTR... are insured. My RTV fell under this category until our State required ATVs/RTVs and similar to be registered vehicles. Once that happened, they now have to have their own policy.

This is how it works for us as well zoom thanks for clearing that up.

I was told that here in Oregon my 900 was covered under my homeowners as long as it was on my property and used to maintain same. I find nothing in my policy to support that however. In the event I should need it I expect the insurance company will say "What coverage"~~~~~~~~KOBE

Whenever it comes to insurance make sure you know what you are actually cover for and what over rides that coverage.

Yes, I should know better by now. Year ago i happened to call my insurance company direct as I could not contact my agent. I had paid this guy for over two years at the time and I was really ticked off when they could not locate my policy. Long story short, that started an investigation and it turned out many people in my county had not one cent worth of insurance. The agent never did go to jail and I just found out last month that he is now back in business under another name.~~~~~~~KOBE

Well, it's time to let the sun go down.
And get the posse to give him a visit.

Right is Right
Wrong is Wrong .....

There is no grey area for what he has done to you and others.

Remember three years ago, when I had my motorcycle crash.
I also had insurance. BUT, there was horrible surprise showed up AFTER
the crash.
Down here in Louisiana, motorist’s vehicles are required to carry minimum liability insurance of $15,000 per person in an accident, $30,000 per accident for bodily injury or death, and $25,000 for property damage.
So after about thirty days after getting the new bike , went BACK to my agent, and beefed up my insurance to $100,000. I am a firm believer that one can not over insure anything.
Then it happend. I had that crash. All know it like to have killed me. Done over $8500 in bike damage and $2500 in accessory damage. Then it was the all the damage to me. HOSPITAL & DOCTOR BILLS ....
Insurance Agent told me to call the company as soon as I got out of the hospital and they will send a adjuster to deal with the bike.
And that I did. During that phone call, I asked the insurance company who do I send the medical bill to when they start arriving. Them or the agent .
The person on the other end paused a moment and said. " MR, all you have is coverage for your bike. NOT FOR YOU . .>>>>>>>> I screamed "BULL CRAP".
So I went to the agent, mad as hell. He told me to settle down, for HE knows I was covered. And not to worry. "JUST COOL OFF". So he got on the phone. Then his eyes peeled at me and said to the person on the other side. That he knows I am covered, for he is the one who sold it to me. They said it was not on the computer so he ( meaning me ) is not covered. Only the bike.
What happend was. I did beef up my insurance. He did type it in. SOMEWHERE BETWEEN HIS OFFICE AND THE MAIN COMPANY. Something went wrong. Either it was a computer clinch. Either the people on the other end did not put it in my file on the computer. We will not ever know. But it was not in the computer, not even on his. Would have been better off just leaving things like they were. But when they (main company ) went back into my computer file, it deleted my part of being insured somehow.
I went home, jerked the envolope out of the filing cabinet that the company sends you telling you all that you got. When I recieved it, I NEVER looked at it, I just mark on the envolope what it is for and file it. DON'T DO THAT, READ BEFORE FILING.
Opened up the envolope, and read. RIGHT THERE IN BLACK and WHITE. It showed that it was only the motorcyle that was insured. All the other stuff I paid for was not lised. If I would have seen it
then, I could have save much hardship and BIG TIME MONEY.
Yes, my agent stood by me. BUT, what he said to the company don't mean anything. He tried again and again to explain to the main company that he sold me the beefed up insurance and that I had a cancelled check to show. He told them I had EVERYTHING INSURED. Myself and the motorcycle.
Don't matter they said, unless it is on the policy. It don't exist.
I contacted several lawyers on this matter. They said the cancelled check just shows a payment. We could fight this for years in courts. But still, it was not on the policy. IF, it was listed in the envolope which the policy is sent to my home. Then, that would be no problem. But being that it doesn't show. IF we went to court, and that could be drag on for years, and the money spent fighting this.
I made the decision to pay the hospital and doctor bills. And it is over. But if I dragged this thing to court, pay lawyers, all court fees, and expenses, and loose.
I am still stuck with the doctor bills and hospital bills.
Bottom line is .
READ THE DAMN POLICY AS SOON AS IT COMES IN. MAKE SURE YOU ARE GETTING ALL THAT YOU PURCHASED. Don't take if for granted that it is all there.
For just a computer clinch. Or some lazy person in the office., cost me a fortune.

I am glad this thread came up, especially BCZOOM's comments about PA. I talked to my insurance broker today. As I figured, if we leave our property with the RTV, it is not covered on our "farm" policy. While it is rare that we leave the property on our equipment, better safe than sorry. Anyhow, this is the quote he got me from Progressive for the RTV - it is essentially a motorcycle policy:

Your policy price is reasonable...

Do you have other off-road vehicles? If so, look into stacking. I have about 6 off-road vehicles. Each ins policy for liability piles on the previous. Basically, I carry $250K on the first vehicle but from stacking (times 6 vehicles), I have a 1.5 million dollar policy.

BTW, you can stack your cars as well.

That's interesting. Good info to know. In addition to the RTV, we have a JD Gator 6x4 and a Honda Recon ATV. We also have three tractors. They are all covered on the regular "farm" policy. I think I am OK with only having the RTV registered/insured to leave the property as everything else stays put.

My independent insurance agent found that Progressive had the best rate, which was $276.16. I'm in North Carolina which dictates coverage limits plus my comprehensive umbrella policy requires I have $250k/$500k/$100k liability coverage on any policy so they will cover me up to their limit. The umbrella policy, different company, also increased their premium to cover that additional liability. My unit is considered an off road vehicle, not for street use, although I can drive it on a public road like a farm vehicle going from point A to B.

Good point TWO GUNS. I have a safety triangle and attach it to the top edge of the tailgate with 4 of those small spring loaded clamps that catch under the lip of the tailgate. I also bought one of those flashing warning lights at Tractor Supply with magnetic base and used silicone to glue a small steel plate on the roof to attach it to. It has a 6' stretch cord to plug into the lighter socket and has a built-in switch. Fortunately I only have about a 1/4 mile to travel on a 5-lane hwy to my other property and don't go during rush hour.

I hadn't thought about the safety triangle two guns, I will have to check and see if it is required in NS. Do you know if they make a small one, I would hate to put one of those big ones on my RTV

@ BaiJiu I just keep my safety triangle up in the cab until I need it, then attach it as described in my previous post. I think you have to use the one that's about 12" high.

Thanks tribute, that would work for me as well, I would hate the have that big ugly thing on teh RTV full time. Actually I like the idea of using the tailgate, I was worried about obstructing my vision if it were on the rack.

I've got a smv (slow moving vehicle) sign on my driver's side mesh screen right there behind my back. I've got used to it there but anywhere else might interfere with backing up for me..... collie

Thanks collie, I finally have some mirrors coming, so behind my back wouldn't be so bad either, I want it to be seen I just don't want to look at it.

A rep from kubota insurance called today and asked if I wanted to lower the value of my tractor for next year. Make a long story short my insurance is going up 230.00 a year which is around a 40% increase. Anyone else got a call?
