No, I don't remember the punishment but I do believe the gesture that came from it was 'the bird'.Right?
Yep, it was the bird. The punishment - cutting off the middle finger. Thus, they would flip the bird, to show that they still had their middle finger.
BTW, that is some of my useless trivia that my wife says I have a never ending supply of. She said if I would figure out how to use that for something good, we would be rich.
