Ford 8210 Noise in top end

Hello everyone. I have had a friend in Sweden who reports noise in his Ford 8210 1988 gen 2. It’s like a tick noise at idle and at mid high rpm can be heard in cabin closed. Trying to check the valve tappets but see it’s 75% slightly under tollerence than over it. One valve was out a lot.

Here is the results highlighted in yellow and the OEM tolerance on the right side of yellow. I don’t think this is a noise been created here and fear the fix is much deeper than expected. I would appreciate any advice please don’t know so much about these ford engines. Can the the cam wear out if so what is the best supplier of parts for a straight replacement and of other things like piston and rings etc

Thanks

Paul

Can the cam wear out? ANYTHING can wear out, cam lobes included. But when any "wear" takes place whether it's cam, lifter, push rod, or rocker arm related the valve lash will increase, not decrease. If the valve adjustment is too tight, I can only think of two reasons for that. 1) Valve face and/or valve seat wear. This would allow the valve stem to travel farther up in the head and reduce clearance. 2) Someone adjusted the valves too tight.

I would adjust them all to spec and see what (if any) difference that makes. Maybe set the valve cover back on without bolts, start and run the engine for a few seconds to see if it's any better. Or maybe run it for bit with the cover off. It shouldn't make too much of a mess.

Thanks. Valves were done now to spec and the noise is still there. I’m thinking could the injectors be an issue here? I cracked them open with a spanner while engine ran and found noise change slightly on number 5 but not certain could say the same about 2 . Impact noise kind of dampened and not so metallic.

Do you think it might be worth testing them?

She’s not hard to start and after about two turns it starts on the button and would not be excessive excessively Smokey. 17 degrees celcius in my shop when started.

It idles well but in cold would hunt a bit until warmed up but I would say it’s normal.

Would love to know your thoughts air anyone here. Cheers

regards

Paul

If the sound changes with one injector cracked then move it to another cylinder and try again. See if the sound follows the injector or stays with the cylinder.

Hi, Did you find the solution ? i have an 8210 with a similar issue and would like to know the outcome before i start ripping it.

Did you find your problem ,Also slight knock in a 8210 here had engine striped checked everything new liners pistons ect all new few years ago ,pump and injectors redone still slight knock

Hello all I’m back and no change unfortunately. I swooped injectors to another as advised I would have thought there was slight change and had to be it. I got all 6 refurbed and tested and the noise is still there. So valves checked all good. No broken valve springs, oil pressure seems good because the switch is working and I can test a new switch from my 7710. Injectors now at there best. Would you say this involves a rebuild? I think yes. Will it do harm to work this summer and hope for the best let me know guys cheers.

Sorry lad no answer on this, do let me know if you find anything
Yes worked it for a year with same knock,, last week pulled engine down , measured cylinder walls (got new liners few years ago) all in spec , got con rods checked for straightness and small ends checked ,all valves pressed to check seats all good,, rebuilt with new pistons and rings , top piston to block measured with dti gague all 6 in spec , still slight knock , so had another 8210 in for engine build so changed over full fuel system pump injectors ect ( that were allready reconditioned engine running sweet in other tractor) and still the knock in this one , put dti gague on each valve , all travelling the same ,,thought it may be in the cam shaft but on the measurements seams good , also messed about with pump timing from 30 degrees btdc right down to 10 btdc , cant get the slight knock out of her but it dosent seem to be doing any harm going to have to drive her on havent came across something like this before 🤣🤣 striped plenty of these engines down that where worked hard and running sweet and broken bits inside them or stuff in the sump 🤣

Thanks for sharing. I released the tractor back to the field. That was some engine strip maybe the crank is off slighly but if it was it would get worse and worse. Anyways you have given me confidence in mine its purring well on the road when loaded its just that knock was bothering me but the more you work it the more it becomes normal
