Engine Operating Temp?

How warm should the engine get under normal conditions? Mine never gets very warm and the temp gauge stays near the bottom. I will check it with a digital thermometer to see what it actually is. Maybe need a thermostat?
Thank you for the help in getting this new to me rig going and checking it out.

BTW: I think that the dent in the tail gate was caused by tipping the body with the gate all the way down (no cables) and hitting a trailer hitch that was in the receiver.

On my RTV 900's the temp gauge barely moved. not even up to 1/4 most of time. On the new to me x1100c it goes up two bars on the digital dash, even when I was driving up hills and ran it for 20+ miles on trails it just went up two bars. I'll guess it is two bars out of five possible bar range. Much the same with my diesel Kubota tractor and excavator for temp gauge readings.

RTV900 1/4 most times. During the summer when climbing a steep grade 1/2.
BX2350 Bota tractor with the same engine reads about the same.

So far my X1100 also only goes up 2 bars.. Even when I pulled a heavy load.
Ive read some where that folks with the Turbo are running a lot warmer ..
That is one thing holding me back from a Turbo. Ive always been under the assumption Heats a BAD Thing ..
