Come along

Hard Times, I've got one of them #8 Fiat Allises. It loves to get stuck too, but I'm never close enough to a big enough tree for my pto winch and my tractor sure won't hold it!:shitHitsFan:

An old ammo can makes a great holder to keep that extra chain from rattling & outta the way.
When thinking about prices, don't forget about yard sales & flea markets for the come-a-long, chains, and extra cable. If you are careful, you can find some good stuff @ a real low price, just look it over good. (I once was put on restrictions from yard sales....I kept finding good chains real cheap, like the 25' welded chain with about 1/2 inch diameter wire links, for $20.)

FWIW-Covering distance

A while back I stuck my 4WD PU in an open field. Had a good chain come-along but not enough chain or cable to reach an anchor point. I did have some short pieces of chain and a sharp axe. I cut several tall light pine trees and chained together enough to reach the anchor point. Worked out quite well. Now I always carry shorter pieces of 5/16" chain rather than a longer chain.

Hadn't thought of that before, but good job-- what-ever works!!

Call me silly, but unless I have an overhead load or am binding something to a trailer, I've as much as possible quit using chains and have gone with 20' 10K# straps. I can carry 300' of that for less weight then 20' of 3/8 chain.

i'm with zoom on this one give up the heavy chain and go with straps they are alot lighter and you can carry lots of them if you roll them up nice and neat.plus they won't scratch or damage your rtv like chain will.

Some very thoughtful comments on the winch vs come along. I guess the answer is... depends. Depends on costs/terrain/uses/operator fitness and comfort level. And of course ,simply said, you never need a pulling device until you need it. I used to do a lot of 4x4ing with a Jeep CJ-5 and all I had were chains, straps, snatch block and a hi-lift manual jack. The few times I really needed to use it was when I was in mud up to the floorboards... all that forward and backward rocking just got me in deeper and deeper. As if by some miracle I was going to jump up out of the ruts I had made. Anyway, I was alot younger then and that hi lift jack is almost bullet proof. Slow going and alot of muscle power got me out. I didnt have to rely on an electric motor that maybe I had not used in a year. Simpler is most times better. Now days, would I put a quality electric winch on a RTV? Probably. (and keep the hi lift jack handy.)

Pulled out no less than a dozen trees a few days back. There is no way I could have done it with something other than my 6k warn. None were a straight pull and had to cut several in two to get around rocks/trees. If anything 6K is a minimum for me.

before they came out with this irs we used to use good old rope and wrap it around the axle and give it gas it worked out great never ever failed us .
