Another tire thread

After seeing what Mark did with his Grim Reapers, comments from other members, and a long conversation with "Robin" at All Terrain. I felt the Reapers would do the job. I could not be happier. I would never load more then they have already carried many times (Firewood up to the top of the ROPS) The ride is way better then the new worksites, and I have moved tons of snow (Usually in two wheel drive) With the factory worksites I was always going the Dif. lock or 4WD. Now it will go where it will scare you in 2WD. Maybe if I was hauling 1/2 ton of rock every load every day, I would look at the Kendras but I'm very happy with the choice I made. (26 x 10" front, 26 x 12" rear, on 2013, 900 XT

I agree. Few people are likely to ever truly test their tires maximum tire weight carrying capacity and I suspect that tire manufacturers also "under-rate" their tires for liability purposes. I too have been impressed by the recommendations of fellow RV owners about the Grim Reapers and their 8 ply rating. Below is an e-mail I received from GBC when looking into their tires for my RTV.

I can understand the reply from GBC for liability reasons. However, if we were unwilling to push the horizon a little bit we would not even be flying today. I remember my mama telling me a lot of things that would not be good for me. She may have been right, but did we listen? Don't get me wrong, I would sing a different tune if we were talking about
my BMW tires and sustained speeds in excess of 80 and occasionally 130 or so, but at 10to 15 MPH , I'm not worried that much about a tire failure. Lookin good so far!~~~
PS, I forgot to mention that when hauling heavy loads I do kick the pressure up to 18 PSI, even then the ride is far softer and smoother then the factory worksites~~~

I agree kobe, not much danger of high speed blowouts :)

I have experienced tire failure with other equipment in the past, when I tried to "push the limit". In my experience, any equipment failure (tires or otherwise), never seems to happen at a good time.

Now I just try to minimize risk through using proper equipment and preventative maintenance. I guess that just proves that you can teach an old dog new tricks :)

Doesn't mean I don't push the limits, I just don't try to out think an engineer/manufacturer when it comes to their specs.

The OTR MAG 350 worksite tires are rated at 1675 lb load capacity (vs 580 lbs Grim Reapers). I suspect that GR load carrying capacity does increase beyond 580 at pressures of 18 - 20 psi since the manufacturer rates the weight capacity of 580 at 12 psi. When I questioned them (GBC) about RTV and 18 - 20 psi they did not recommend their product. :0 Having heard that, I simply continued my search for alternatives.

I am not saying that the grim reapers are a poor choice or don't provide great traction, there are many posts attesting to their worth. I simply decided to keep looking for alternatives.

Will Rogers is often quoted for saying, "Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment". I still display lots of bad judgment (just ask my wife), but I try not to repeat my past mistakes :)

I would never disagree with being safe. And Will Rogers had more common sense then all the modern worlds politicians put together~~~~~~

I'm kinda wondering why your tires are beyond your flares Two Guns. I have ITP rims and 12" wide Reapers on the rear(Your tire are different but the cross section should be about the same.) Mine are at least one inch inside the flares. The only time I get flying mud is from the front tire on a tight turn.

Don't know why either. I will try to take photo ....

.......... two guns:harley:

Jamie,

Do you know the offset of the rims you're using? I wonder if they're off by an inch compared to OEM.

Here it is ........

It will cover the side of the RTV. Which it don't take much of a overhang to do any vehicle that way.
And DON'T stick you head out of the cab while rolling in the edge of a muddy field. You will get make-up installed on you and maybe a clunk of mud paddied
on the back of your head ...... Now this is only if your moving fast down the turn row .....
