my dads 455 has bit the dust, no compression !!!! yes i could tear it down and rebuild it but dad is going to trade it in on another 455. they are giving him 1000 for the junk one and selling him the running one for 3500.
any of you 455 owners have any "common" problems you run into on these models i need to look for?
my dad had a 300 series that was a diesel that lasted 10 years and he bought it used, the dead 455 lasted about 2 but had 2500 to 3000 hours when he bought it. thing of it is both the 300 series and this 455 lost compression, j/d told him 3k to rebuild this one.
thanks for your help guys

I wish I knew more about the JD LT and GT tractors...not enough to give a viable opinion anyway...

I will say that in terms of durability and longevity, even in the smallest of tractors....nothing runs like a Deere Diesel (or Kubota, MF, Simplicity etcetera..)

Mark, the 455 uses a yanmar 3 cyl diesel I believe, I know you know your stuff about them.

Has it lost compression in all cylinders, and was it instant, or over time? Are all the fluids in the right places (water, oil...)? Any holes in the head or block? Any smoke?
If I'm thinking right you can just take the cover off the top of the engine and look at the valves, if there arent any holes in the block thats the first place I would look.

I didnt have time to look at it to much before we took it to deere, i know the intake valves were opening and closing and due to the smoke im pretty sure the exhaust valves were doing their thing. this unit had quite a bit of blow by the day he brought it home, to much in my opinion. I know nothing about the jd block, weather its a sleved engine or not and weather or not over sized rings are available. I am really not to interested in rebuilding a unit in the kind of shape its in. dads real hard on equipment, all the fluids are in place and in good shape, injection pump is doing its thing but didnt have a pop off tester handy to check the injectors. I think if this one is in good shape tomorrow he will go ahead and get it. I also think i am going to add a temp gage to it so he can watch it while hes mowing in august and its 110 outside.
preciate your help ill keep ya guys posted.
