WINCH SAFELY

[:O] There is many folks that has used winches many, many times threw life. And there are some who are new at this. I cannot stress enough, how dangerous these winches can be. The power, pressure, and stress these cables go threw during use in unbeliveable..... So please use extreme caution when having to put these little machines to work.

A great method, which many folks practice, and they also tell you this in many manuals, is to place a blanket, towel, your jacket, large rags, about six foot from the hook during winching .It will slow the snap back lash in the event of a broken cable or hook. Please winch safely !!!!

God Bless !!!

Thanks Jamie

I am one of those that are new to winching. I used a come-along sp? once to get a stuck vehicle out. I was nervous using that. You could tell there was a bit of tension on it, but how much is too much? and unlike a winch there is no way to standing out of the way.

I have done some searching online on winch info. There was someone that did a test. intentionally breaking the winch line. They used a blanket [moving company blanket] on one test, they also used a coat, and another, without anything covering it. They also used the new rope. The uncovered cable.. came back with deadly force. The blanket worked very well at reducing the travel of the flying cable. They said the coat did not stay on as well. They said the rope almost dropped in its tracks. It really does not store any energy.

In addition to being safer it is lighter, and more flexible. It will be warmer to the hand, than cable. In cold weather even with gloves on the cold of handling metal will get you. Cables always tend to break a strand or two.. so there are those little pieces to poke you.

For those that are just now buying a winch, there are companies offering winches with the rope already installed.

Re: WINCH SAFELY

I'm switching to Amsteel rope for the reasons mentioned. I have the rope, just need to install it. Hmmmm, maybe today.

Re: WINCH SAFELY

Got the rope installed yesterday. Just handling it is 1000% better than the steel cable.

I need to pull a tree down today so we'll see how it performs in a few hours. Waiting for daylight...
