Where to get tailgate cables?

I pulled a silly redneck move and unloaded an excavator bucket by backing up and hitting the breaks. Took my tailgate cable with it (RTV 1140). I'm sure the dealer can set me up with a new one but does anyone know of any other sources that might be cheaper? Could I make my own with off the shelf hardware? Thanks.

Trailmaker, Several years ago, I also broke my cables over a period of time. I just got a nice, small piece of chain and put it in a little piece of inner tube off of a bike etc (or swing set) and left it at that. I did both sides and it worked great and saved $$. (It didn't look bad neither). bordercollie

edit: the innertube/cover fit tight and kept it from clapping.

I just thought I would mention that since I had good luck with it. I had it on my '05 model for a long time and when I sold it , the chains still were holding strong. This is the only picture I found sorta showing the chain and how it blended in with the RTV. No rubber tubing in this shot. The '05 had a hook where the chain just hooked on the top and I think a pin in the bottom?. My '11 model has pins top and bottom.
One thing about the cables you had, if that had been chain, it wouldn't have broken easily and may have torn more up if it had pulled the side pins. Good Luck. bordercollie

Chains and a bicycle inner tube sure sound like a great way to fix it. Good thinking BC!!!!! :thumb:

And the those cable ends keep binding on the hooks on the box! I'm going to replace mine with chains - great idea.

Thanks Popo1945. They sure worked good for my '05 and when my cables on the '11 give trouble, they will go. Provided they will fit without binding on this new model. I don't like the way the oem loops stick straight out. I would do it now but the bedliner paint is applied over the pin heads and I hate to break it loose till they give trouble. I know from past experience though that having a piece of frayed cable stick in your hand sure is aggravating . bordercollie

Mine broke after about 2 years.I replaced them with small chains and they have been problem free for 6 years now.Cost was about 4 bucks to do both sides. The advantage to the chains are you can adjust the amount you want the tailgate open.Level for most things but i shorten them up when im hauling wood so its like 1/4 way closed so I can get more wood in without loosing any.

Factory Cables are also DANGEROUS. Needed to step on gate to reach something and cables broke. Yeah i'm a little overweight but sheesh. Maybe after someone sues them they'll wise up.

I just bought an 06 RTV900, and like the idea of chains so I went to inspect the cables on the 'new to me' RTV ..and there are none. It already has chains on. Did Kubota ever put chains on from the factory or were they always cable? These look like they've been there quite awhile.

Doc, I bought my '05 in February of 2005. It had cables then- until I changed them . My 2011 900 xt has cables as well but the top "hook' has been replaced with a pin and cotter pin. It would be not as simple as the old model to change the chain's catch length unless you keep pliers in your pocket.... I do -till they fall out....... Bordercollie

Thanks BC. :thumb:
I sure know what you mean about having the pliers ....until they fall out of ur pocket. Been there done that way to often. :yum:

Haha muleman. They sure don't make pockets like they used to. I am luck if my linemans pliers happen to end up under the seat. I have a pair of Knipex which I paid $45 for to cut high tensile with.Tiny pliers with a great leverage and jaw to be easy on the hands.. I'll ball if (when) I loose them........Jeans pockets today are way too shallow and where did the watch pocket go to on the off brands?? I now have to get my Wrangler jeans in the boy's dept for $12.52 a pair and at least have a decent pocket. Many lost pliers will buy a few pair.. bordercollie
