Starter repair

drove rtv 1100 into water hole at hunting club wasn't expecting it to be deep, big mistake.
now starter started to sound like battery was week but battery is good, now starter just spinning not engaging. new one almost 600.00. very expensive mud hole. Any ideas on a replacement or repair. Auto parts has one aftermarket for 130.00 but it says it fits all models. When I called Messicks they had to call Kubota it lists two of course mine was the more expensive. Any help would be appreciated.

Most towns have people in business that rebuilds starters. I would check and see about that first. Here in central Ms there are several. It is uncommon knowledge, but some tractor stores use these folks here and then multiply the charge to the customer.... also have seen some on e bay . Oh and welcome to the forum ! :) bordercollie

I believe the first thing I would do is remove the starter and take it to a starter repair shop in the nearest reasonable sized town and have them look at it before I even considered replacing it. If they say it is unrepairable check with them on options on replacement.

That was one of my first thoughts also especialy after finding out the cost of new one. Hate being without it, a must at my hunting club. And hunting getting good!! Thanks for response.

All excellent thoughts about the repair ...NOT REPLACE.... of the starter They aren't complicated and are easily torn down by someone equipped to do it. I bet it got water inside the case and before it could dry out it got voltage applied to the coil.........poooof

now starter just spinning not engaging.
It sounds like the bendix is stuck. While someone turns the key, rap on the starter with a rubber mallet. It might free it up. Otherwise, I'd suggest you remove it and do what was suggested at a local repair shop. It may just need cleaned or a couple minor parts.

Most towns have starter alternator repair shops around that can rebuild it cheap.I just took an alt from my 1974 david brown tractor and it only cost me 75 for a total rebuild. Now I dont have to keep a charger on it all winter

If you have any mechanical ability you can take it apart, clean/lube everything and put it back together. Very simple design.

If not, any local backyard mechanic shop can do it.

yes, do it yourself, they are easy to work on.,,BUT,,,be careful with the beating on a starter to see if that fixes something stuck! You notice BZOOM said rubber mallet. If you hit it with a steel hammer(like i do sometimes) you risk breaking the field magnet glued to the case inside,,,and then it is junk.

It may just need totally cleaned out.

Yes, DO NOT use a steel hammer.

It's been a long time but I also recall they aren't hard to take apart. BUT... (and I need others to chime in here with the details), you need to watch for the springs that are in there. You don't want them flying out of their positions.

The armature magnets have springs behind them. Just be patient and take your time in the teardown. You can do it.

Take starter off, place on work bench. Battery source?? jumper cable negative to housing, positive to battery post on starter and see if it spins.
