RTV Shifting >>>> pre-XT Models

Found this, thought I would share........

To improve the shifting on their pre-xt model RTV's the best way is to replace the reverse high pressure relief valve with the one from a XT model. The part number of the valve is K750114900. This will reduce the pressure on deceleration reducing the "dynamic" braking and it also has a small orifice in it to bleed off the hydraulic pressure which helps shifting . You CAN reduce the pressure setting of the existing valve which will help with the shifting and reduce the braking but it is not as good as the new valve. This is not an approved Kubota fix by the way! If you do want to adjust the original valve, 3 turns to be the magic number. :tiphat:

What determines an XT model? I have an 04 900 so I'm sure mine is not an XT. Yeah, I have trouble shifting once in awhile but, turn the steering wheel back & forth helps the shifting. The braking in reverse is terrible - practically snaps your neck!!! How big a job is it to do the replacement?

Some other members might need to chime in on this. But I believe the "XT" model did
not get released until maybe 2011 >>> Think our member bordercollie was the first I even heard of getting one when the older one got replaced ....

Thanks Two Guns. I was excited when the xt can out in 2011 and since my '05 machine had many hours at over 4000. I decided to try it with the 0 % financing. The xt supposedly stands for "xtra torque" or that is what I read somewhere. I have the same old problem shifting sometimes but turning the steering wheel always helped on the '05 and the 2011xt as well. The xt has the one piece shaft and an extra cooler under the seat for the transmission. -it clogs with grass easily. Also has a contoured seat which will collect rain water. I like the fast take off from a dead stop in high- fast for the RTV anyway. The performance of the transmission is very different than the '05 for me and how I use it on the farm. I will try to get some pictures of it today (transmission) - I pressure washed the mud off yesterday in anticipation of putting on the new tires. I had mud all in the inner wheels packed to the top of the wheel and knew I had to get it out while still soft...Anyway, now the transmission is view-able... bordercollie

I have not done mine as I need the braking up here on the hills. I have the instructions in PDF format on how to adjust your existing valve. No cost way to see if it is what you want. Send me a pm or email. They are too big for the forum.

I have an '07 RTV 900 with 2400 hours (bought used). I was wondering about the coasting when I let off the accelerator. I thought the RTV was supposed to have engine braking but mine does not (it just starts to have a whining noise sort of like my Polaris Sportsman 400). I would like to get the engine braking back as I use it in the mountains. Where would I adjust it to fix it? I don't even know if it has one of those coast valves installed as I don't know what to look for.

Thanks for your help.

Hi NC Retiree. I recently bought a 06 RTV900 and it is obvious it does not have the coast valve. It stops on a dime without ever touching the brake. I'd guess yours does have the coast valve.
I'm sure someone will be along shortly to show you what they look like and where it would be located.

Welcome to net tractor talk. I'm glad you found us.

Thanks Doc.

Also, the accelerator seem anemic. I will be checking the adjustments per the shop manual I downloaded for it but it seems it has a very short push on the accelerator. It can barely make it up a hill with just me in it. Engine seems to run great, just no power. Thoughts?

Thanks

Welcome NC. Glad to have you here with us. Have you checked the spark arrestor in regards to the anemic power?

Welcome NC Retiree !!!! Happy your here.

There is several things you need to do about your " just no power". The machine has the power, it's something usally simple. Some simple questions.
* When was the RTV's last serviced, I mean not just the engine oil, but the transmission ?
* Fuel Filter, is it fresh. What about the quality of the fuel ?
* Air Cleaner, check this also. Really a big factor, and if you don't have it, get yourself a high rise intake.
* As bordercollie suggested, Clogged Spark Arrestor ? Have you checked it to see
* Adjustments, as you mentioned, could be checked and adjusted, just for sake of most need it anyway, even from the factory new.
Believe it or not. If it's not fuel or spark arrestor related, odds are, the transmission needs fluid changing. And if it has been changed. What fluid was installed in it. Not just any 'ole fluid will work in these machines. There are some that puts different hydraulic fluids that will work, but it will not let the machine get it's full power like it can produce. I myself, have witnessed this from other RTV's in my area. Filters, I suggest only the OEM
filters for the transmission. Don't know about any other filter in the tranny, but I've seen some folks go cheaper, and that is just what they got.
Engine fuel filter, and the oil filter. Wix brand will do just fine. But stick with Kubota tranny filters for the best results.

Keep us up to date on how things are going with your machine. What are your plans for this RTV ?

Bordercollie's XT transmission

Here are a few pictures of the XT transmission on my 2011 model. This is one of the few times you will see picture of a clean RTV when bordercollie is involved. :yum: Also notice that I changed my transmission today while the weather was good. I let the gasket fall into the oil collector and fished it right out with a magnet. It is easy to drop those things.... Also notice the graphite like collection of transmission wear on the magnetic oil plug- which is a nice feature- this was with about 330 hrs on this change. I am currently using SUDT2.
You can also see one of the little blue tape wrapped pig tails or cow tails (right Mark S. :) ) That Kubota has in various places for electric hook up. bordercollie

bordercollie, was this your service change for the transmission.
How do you like that SUPER UDT2 ?

Hey Two Guns, this is my first time to use the #2. I have been using the SUDT. My normal change for the transmission is every 400 hrs- that is about every 8 months give or take for me. I will let you know how it does after I have used it a bit. I want to get my tires on tomorrow and service the front end fluids too- barring any cow problems- what is a day without those , I don't know .. but it sure beats an office job... unless it is freezing cold, windy and muddy. ;) . bordercollie

edit: the used transmission oil is the color of dark olive oil- the clouds reflecting in that oil container make it look weird.

Two Guns:
Thanks for the reply. As soon as I got the RTV, I replaced all engine and transmission and hydraulic fluids (including coolant). I used the new Super UDT2 from Kubota for transmission and hydraulics. I replaced all filters with Kubota filters (except the air filters because the dealer was out of stock so I blew them out). Because the brakes felt spongy, I also replaced brake fluid with Dot 3 and bled the brakes. The brakes still need to be pushed aggressively but they do stop the machine.

Acceleration seems as though you have about an inch to push on the pedal and that's all you get.

As for shifting, it can get stuck in R and it did jump out of L once. I've learned to goose the accelerator to take pressure off to help get it out of gear. I ordered a replacement cable for the pressure release valve. Hopefully this will help.

Oh, sorry, I did not mean to change the subject of the discussion. I'll do better in the future.

That surely doesn't seem right. You should get it all the way to the floor. I'd check all the linkages and such for a bind (or way out of adjustment).

Don't apologize >>> That what this forum is all about. That is how we all know and learn. Keep on telling .

Two Guns, I owe you an apology. When I went to put my new tires on today, I changed fluid in the front end and saw that the jug - which I have left over from a previous trans change, was indeed SUDT2. I was thinking it was the orange top Sudt but nope it had the silver top and I looked and there it was SUDT 2............... . I'm getting old . :bonk: :boom: bordercollie edit: If our weather was colder, I would probably notice a bigger difference in performance but so far I would guess that it is a bit smoother in motion. I know I have power- but attributed that to the new make transmission being an"X T" . I am eager to see how much wear" dust" will be on the magnetic plug next time I change the transmission. By the way, the front end oil change looked dark amber with just a hint of olive oil coloring. - collie
