RTV 1100 will not go into 4WD

Hello All-- I was out plowing this morning and my rtv slipped out of 4WD and would not re-engage. I have had issues since owning this RTV (i am the 2nd owner and got it with around 1600hrs) where the 2wd/4wd engagement lever would fall down and disengage 4wd to the point where I normally have to shove something against the lever to keep it in place while plowing.

I recently adjusted the tension on the lever in hopes of resolving this issue but it didnt make much of a difference and would continue to slip.

The lever now moves freely back and forth and it doesnt feel like it is a hydrostatic pressure issue that is preventing it from engaging. I disconnected the cable at the transfer case and can move the 4wd engagement shaft freely back and forth. I jacked up all four tires and when I try to engage 4wd at the transfer case manually and rotate the front tires it feels like the 4wd engagement shaft is stripped. Does anyone have any experience with replacing this shaft at the transfer case? How big of a job is this?

I didn't see which model you have. The 4x4 mechanism is all gear driven on the X series, I am not sure on the older models. The driveshaft to the front differential is about $600. I am having a hard time imagining why the 4x4 would pop out of gear.

I have the pre-x series, I believe around a 2011. One thing I did notice when taking out the bolt behind the engagement shaft is the indent ball and spring are missing which I believe is what holds the fork engaged. However that still doesnt explain why it would no longer engage into 4wd

Adding another update, hoping someone can point me in the right direction on this. I jacked up all four tires and put it on stands and still had no luck getting the 4wd to engage. Front Drive shaft spins freely. I did bull the sensor and the top of the transfer case and can see the fork for the 4wd engagement moving freely but for whatever reason it is not grabbing and holding the front drive shaft. I did notice that the large outside gear being the Rotor Sensor SP looks to be fairly chewed up but from what I see on the parts diagram that should not effect the engagement.

I wish I could offer some advice. I remember someone (maybe not on this site) removing the front drive shaft without removing the front differential. It sounds like someone has taken the transmission apart and didn't reassemble it correctly. Especially if the ball and spring for the detent are missing.

Thank you. Unfortunately I am thinking it is beyond just removing the front drive shaft and is going to require taking apart the transfer case. Wondering if anyone on here has experience pulling the transfer case and transmission without pulling out the motor as well?

I don't think that is possible. The work shop manual for the x series has you pulling both the engine and transmission at the same time. On the X series you can pull the hydrostat off of the transmission whereas the pre x models the hydro unit was interregnal to the transmission.

sounds like the splines on your front propeller shaft are stripped. could be the shaft that is stripped or could be the coupler.
