We're going to need more info.
Where was the oil coming from? What does it smell like (e.g. does it smell like diesel)? How much oil came out? If you pull the dipstick, is there still oil in there? Any indications of oil spray or leak from the top side of the engine?
Elaborate on "sputter". Was it knocking or just sounding like it was having a hard time getting started?
