Went and bought some new chicks a couple weeks ago and thought I would post some pictures of the portable pen and run I built last summer. The pen has quick attach wheels, or it can be pulled around on it's steel skid. The run is made of 6 wire panels covered with chicken wire and has 'quick clamps' between each section so they can be easily moved. The pen has a large self waterer built in to one end which kinda shows in the tractor picture. The end panels are interchangeable panels-one set has built in laying boxes which I'll put in when the chicks are older.
Had to get a picture of TJ and his favorite grandpa letting him pet a chicken last summer, and some of the chickens free ranging.

Gotta tell you, if you haven't had chickens, get some, their a 'hoot'.
Nica.

I'm afraid my wife's cats would like the chickens a little to much.

Great pics. That metal frame run looks cool. They'd be protected but can still move about. Very neat.

Nice looking set up! I'm waiting for my kids to get a little older then I'm planning on building a big chicken tractor to drag around the property.

I want the kids to do the feeding and watering. ;)

Good looking setup.

We have had chickens for about 35 years. Like you said, they are a hoot. Like other livestock, they can be a bother when it comes time to find someone to care for them when you want to go off for a few days, though. For that reason, we are looking to get rid of ours.

Great Idea NH, a member asked last week about "Raising Chickens, need Some advice." on my site and your solution is perfect, so I linked your thread :tiphat: !

Hope you don't mind!

Nica, I really like that idea! My dad used a bunch of highboy lawn mower wheels on his "chicken tractor", but it is a PIA to move. I have a couple of axles in the junk pile...hmmm.

If you look close, you can see, I built my coop on old JD steel mower wheels, but I think the coop is a little big to haul around these days.

My chix I got this fall should be coming on line any day now...

let me try that again..hope you can see the wheels this time.

Keep in mind the chix have to survive the winters around here, that is why my coop is the best insulated structure on the property (for now)

I was going to build an 8X10 coop, but I had some 11 and 13 foot beams laying around and figured I couldn't do much with a 2 ft cut off so I just made the coop a little bigger...

BUt chickens are fun and you will have a tough time choking down store bought eggs once you have had "Pasturized" eggs.
