Front hub removal

Hello all, I have a RTV 900 and I am trying to get the front hub off,(I have a lug bolt broken off and I can't seem to get it out), I removed the castle nut and took a gear puller to try and remove the hub but all it seems to do is push back the axle until it gets so tight that I am afraid i will break something if I go further. On the back of the housing I can see the axle moving back but the hub does not break free. Anyone out there have any experience this or have removed a hub. I would appreciate your thoughts.

Member Bordercollie has removed hers I believe. It is most likely a press fit in the pivot casting. On most vehicles this usually requires a BFH and a few ball joint forks.

Thanks Muleman. If I am thinking on the lines you are, there is a snap ring. I will dig up the manual/parts page. The parts book has a great diagram . bordercollie

edit: forester45, I will send you a pm to a link where I have that scanned in an on line album. That way, you can use the features of the site to magnify the hub and see all the pieces clearly. When you get to that scan, just click on the magnifier above it then you can enlarge with the slide bar in the bottom right. Anybody else ask and I will pm it as well. Let me know if it doesn't work or come through.

Thanks, bordercollie, I can see that I will have to remove the hub unit to get at those snaprings. I did copy the attachment you sent thanks. By the way in searching the web I came across Messicks web site and found a diagram too. I appreciate your help.

Messicks has a nice site and that should come in real handy. A picture is worth a thousand words . Thanks and let us know how it turns out. bordercollie

Welcome to the forum. It's just like bleeding the brakes on a vehicle. You can have someone pump the pedal, or gravity bleed it. We've done it both ways in the shop. The bleeder is on top of the knuckle under a small metal protective cap. Let us know if you need any help.

Thanks cov, I saw that little cover but haven't looked under it yet. Probably tomorrow. I got the stripped lug bolt out and repaired the hole with a helicoil so did not have to pull apart the axle flange, just need to reinstall the hub assembly and bleed the brakes.

Thanks to all for your replies.
