Ford 8210 Noise in top end

Hello everyone. I have had a friend in Sweden who reports noise in his Ford 8210 1988 gen 2. It’s like a tick noise at idle and at mid high rpm can be heard in cabin closed. Trying to check the valve tappets but see it’s 75% slightly under tollerence than over it. One valve was out a lot.

Here is the results highlighted in yellow and the OEM tolerance on the right side of yellow. I don’t think this is a noise been created here and fear the fix is much deeper than expected. I would appreciate any advice please don’t know so much about these ford engines. Can the the cam wear out if so what is the best supplier of parts for a straight replacement and of other things like piston and rings etc

Thanks

Paul

Can the cam wear out? ANYTHING can wear out, cam lobes included. But when any "wear" takes place whether it's cam, lifter, push rod, or rocker arm related the valve lash will increase, not decrease. If the valve adjustment is too tight, I can only think of two reasons for that. 1) Valve face and/or valve seat wear. This would allow the valve stem to travel farther up in the head and reduce clearance. 2) Someone adjusted the valves too tight.

I would adjust them all to spec and see what (if any) difference that makes. Maybe set the valve cover back on without bolts, start and run the engine for a few seconds to see if it's any better. Or maybe run it for bit with the cover off. It shouldn't make too much of a mess.

Thanks. Valves were done now to spec and the noise is still there. I’m thinking could the injectors be an issue here? I cracked them open with a spanner while engine ran and found noise change slightly on number 5 but not certain could say the same about 2 . Impact noise kind of dampened and not so metallic.

Do you think it might be worth testing them?

She’s not hard to start and after about two turns it starts on the button and would not be excessive excessively Smokey. 17 degrees celcius in my shop when started.

It idles well but in cold would hunt a bit until warmed up but I would say it’s normal.

Would love to know your thoughts air anyone here. Cheers

regards

Paul

If the sound changes with one injector cracked then move it to another cylinder and try again. See if the sound follows the injector or stays with the cylinder.
