Cabin heater issue

I I have a 3-year-old RTV x1100. I can no longer change heat direction in the cab. The knob to do so rotates, but changes nothing. For example, I cannot redirect heat from the floor to the windshield. I have taken the knob off and it appears intact and functional. With the engine off, if I rotate the knob, I can no longer hear things changing under the dash, as I can in an Identical machine owned by a friend. Any advice is welcome. Thank you.

Regards.

Can't help you specifically since I don't have that model.
I got this picture off the internet. Does that heating control panel pop out of the dash?

Thank you for the reply.

I removed the lower panel of the dashboard. 10 screws and it was out, allowing access to the cable ends which control temperature and heat location. The attached photo shows the cable end on a post. The one in focus is the temperature control. Looking closely you will see a protrusion locking the cable end in place. The one above it and somewhat out of focus is the heat location control. Apparently, the locking mechanism on that post is worn or broken allowing the cable to disengage. As you can guess, it is difficult to get to. I am able to put it back on, but turning the dial all the way counterclockwise causes it to disengage. Not sure how to fix it, however I now have it set to heat where I desire.

You could put an E-clip or a C-clip on the shaft next to the cable so it can not slip off.
You do not need a slot for it to be secure if properly sized.

A distinct possibility. Accessibility will be an issue, but worth attempting. Thanks.
