Check the data plate on the frame. I thought some of that series might have been assembled in China. If so, they still have a good reputation.

Interesting you mention that. I had purchased Harbor Freight 5/16" x 20' grade 70 chains for $30/ea. I noticed Home Depot and TSC both had Chinese chains, so I figured, why not? I then saw Lowes had US made chains for $35. I returned the HF ones and bought the Lowes ones.

I bought this cheap set at HF:http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=527 and had very good luck drilling into 3/4" steel plate. I used smaller bits to step up the holes before drilling with the 1" bit.

Nice looking saw. Seems to have more to it (guards, etc...) than I remember. Some of the ones I've seen appear that they will reach out and do harm. Of course I also seem to remember the ones I saw were belt drive, from a different era.
