I'm not getting much done outside due to the heat. I used to be able to tolerate the heat but as I age, it's not working for me. I do low physical requiring projects in this heat.

If you're comparing diesel vs gas/petrol, It's not the same IMHO. I have friends with the high HP go-fast Rangers and similar but there's no way their petrol engine can compete against the diesel RTV in terms of pure grunt, put the power to the ground.

If your starter is still solidly attached as mentioned, in my experience, hit it harder with a hammer. If you have another person available, have them hold the ignition key in the START position when you hit it with the hammer.
