I can disengage the 4WD and I've been gently using it that way but it still binds a little and I don't want to keep going back and forth. Plus, if there's something loose, it may eventually fall off or something and get chewed up by gears - while chewing up gears.

I tried lifting the front end with the loader and sorting it with jack stands under the front axle. I don't really hear anything with it off though. The tires spin free going forward and backward. The ring and bevel gears all looked good, bearings are all new, etc in the front end. I'm thinking...

I have a DK50, around 2001ish, that binds (locks up) in 4WD when going forward and does the same thing in reverse when in 2WD. Any ideas, other than splitting the tractor? I'm thinking it's something with the selector forks but I'm hoping it's something simpler.
