What are the H/L and 4WD gearboxes like on these Quincy? On most the 4x4s I have driven it takes a combination of skill and brute force to get them to shift, same on LRs or should they be smooth? I grew up with my parents having a succession of Suzuki SJs. They didnt have a roof from about May...

Basic Paint & Body Part l & ll

Mark, Naphtha? Any in particular, will petrol (gas) do? How do you tell if a particular paint is good? I can tell that you have decided your paints of choice over years of experience, is there any way to tell without shooting some? Are you planning to do more detail into the paint guns and...

Cali, I really struggle to understand the pollution standards. It seems to me that all the standards do is mean that you have to have a larger engine to produce the same HP as engines over here do, it seems somewhat counterproductive to me. It seems remarkable how little HP you guys are getting...

Thanks Mark. Looking back I see that you answered my second question in your first post, that'll teach me for trying to think so soon after getting up! So on the panel replacement you cut the hole out and fit a patch inside the hole, butt welding around the edge of the patch? I could start...

Very interesting Mark, thanks for posting. I do have some questions regarding the filler. How are you applying it, with the plastic plates in the 'filler' picture presumably? How do you get the filler to curve around the outside edge of the hood (with a straight edge on the plastic plate I would...

Normal tractor sort of stuff then Erik? I suppose the thing I am most concerned about is the dreaded rust. I stuck my head under and it looked good, but I'm guessing the worst offending places are going to be hard to see (mud traps). I'm going back next weekend to take a closer look, the dealer...

Cali, none of those on the site you linked to were what I would consider a 'true' Landrover. It doesnt look like they sell the Defender in the US then? Its a similar story over here with regards to the fancier Landrovers, a status symbol for the rich. Though, I do know of some people who use...

Anyone familiar with these? Just went to look at one at a dealer. Beyond signs of rust on the chassis I'm not too sure what I'm looking for with regards to common faults. Its ex-army, then private owner. 16 years old with 136k on the clock. The price seems maybe a bit 'too good' if you see...

    Pressure release

So one works fine, and the other is a pain? Swap the 2 over, if the same one is still a pain then you have a bad QC. If the problem stays with the line (swaps QCs) then its a pressure release problem. Seeming as you are relieving the pressure I cant see how it would be a pressure release...

    So do you collect leaves?

Brush seems to work best for me. Chew them up with the mower and sweep up whats left. Gets all the little sticks and junk, wipes the worm casts off the grass too. And you get nice stripes :D

    Pressure release

Ahh, you have the flat face connectors by the looks of things then? I'm afraid I don't know much about those, but they are 'supposed' to be easier to connect than the other type. I suppose its possible that yours are defective, but it would seem unlikely that both of them would be defective...

    Pressure release

You are turning off the engine are relieving the pressure before you remove the grapple? Another thing you can do is get a flat ended punch and push in the little nipples in the quick attach connectors, you'll find it pushes a little fluid out and relieves the pressure. The male ones you can...

    Pressure release

If you turn the engine off and wiggle the control lever you will relieve the pressure in the lines, you might find it easier then. Welcome to the site!

    Is there such thing as.....

Well, thats a good question. Probably, yes. Actually, I'd love to do that sort of thing full time but I dont think now is a good time to get into the building/excavating trade. I suppose another thing to consider is whether I could buy something cheap now (machines like that were worth about...

    Is there such thing as.....

Brutus, thats a good point. I'm not sure that a TLB would be cheaper than a trackhoe though. I'm looking at stuff that is essentially working scrap :D I have been keeping an eye on ebay, and stuff like these comes up. 30 ton trackhoe and that one is seriously tempting, however, you couldn't...
