RTV forums Restructure

As a way of thanking all you RTV'rs for your support during the site supporter drive I would like to do what I can to make the RTV forums here on NTT easier to use and find old posts.

To that end I an thinking of restructuring the RTV forums so that we have multiple choices on where to start a new thread or look for an old one. This would mean myself and the mods would go through the one RTV forum we currently have and move the threads to the appropriate new forum. This would make them easier to find certain types of threads whether buying, fixing or working with your RTV.

So far this is what I've thought of but I'm looking to you guys to add to or make better suggestions for forum names / categories.

1 RTV Owning and operating Forum
2. RTV Buying and Pricing Forum
3. RTV Repairs Forum
4 RTV Odd Jobs Forum
5. RTV add Ons Forum (Stereos, Stick Stoppers, Winches, etc etc)
6. Trailering your RTV Forum(not sure if we have enough on this subject but not sure where else it would go).

Now what am I missing? Once set up any of these can be modified or added to fairly easily but i want to put some thought into all this prior to making the changes. So ...what do you all think of this. Good or you prefer to keep things as is?

Doc, I really appreciate what you do. PLEASE do not take this as criticsm; BUT........IF IT AINT BROKE DON'T FIX IT...........What I mean by that is that to me, this seems pretty good and isn't spread out over 6 different places to have to go through to see who is saying what about various subjects.

The only thing that I don't care for presently is all of the "stickys" that have blossemed lately. One has to scroll down to get ot what folks are talking about. Yes, that is just one step to reach over to the mouse, move it around, and there you are; but to me kind of a pain in the tail one. Perhaps some way to condense all of those stickys would be a good thing.........

What I really like is that it is simple.........NOT have to do a bunch of navigating around to find what is going on. There is always the thought of having the machines categorized by type/year into different forums..........Again it just seperates and keeps folks and ideas apart.

My thought is that most folks would do like NOW.....go to the "owning and operating" forum.........Who knows; but I truly do like it like it is except for the stickys. lololol......besides we always have ol Border Collie to fall back on for references as to what is where......HUG................God bless........Dennis

Good points Dennis and that is exactly why I asked. and I did wonder if some of the saved searches that bordercollie must have would be messed up if we go moving things around. there is a down side to everything .... discussing this helps all.

I'll see what i can do about the stickies. :hide:

I strongly agree with Dennis.
Also, there is way to many stickys. Don't mind two or maybe three. But we are getting a "FLEET" of stickys. Maybe keep one for MAINTENANCE, (which that covers everything from oil to stick stoppers, tires, trouble-shooting >>>
and one for accessories.

I am speaking for myself only. But sometimes changing is not always for the better. I know several places on the internet, that when changes are made on their pages. Don't seem to go there as much , and have trained myself to working what I am familiar with. Members start to just fade away, and I DON'T want this to happen on this site. We have a strong ties here, and many of us have made this site a part of our life.
Again, this is just my opinion .....
Like Dennis, I appreciate ALL things that you have done !!!!!

Does everyone use the "New Posts" option or do you come directly into the RTV section?

When you use the "New Posts", it shows all new posts/threads regardless of where they are on the forum. I use this so I can see everything new all across the forum sections.

Yep, that is how I do it and this is why I thought additional forums to categorize RTV types of posts would be beneficial to the users. Make things easier to find without having to use the dreaded weak VB search engine that does not like anything less than 4 letter words.

I have no problem with the way it is now, I was trying to help all / make it better ...and yes, I've had the same experience Jamie where a site tries to make things better and it is harder to use and frustrating to the users and you lose members. We sure do not need that.

Stickies are there to make it easy to find the thread on RTV tires , stick stoppers, manuals etc etc. Most end up looking for that kind of stuff. You all would rather have them 'un-stuck" and just be somewhere in the RTV forums? depending on the last time someone posted in the thread they could go back years in the posting order, so it would be way deep into the forums. harder to find for sure.

Instead of all the sticky threads, how about we have a single sticky with a list of the important threads and a link to each?

We have been up since daylight in the chilly rain getting up bulls that got loose (49 of 'em) so I am late to this.:hammer:
I wish the tag thing was more used, for that it seems if older posts aren't tagged, they don't show up on a search very well... I don't know how it could be changed though... unless the tag thing was more noticeable. I have to agree with my brothers, I too, like it like it is ,but sure do appreciate you taking care of us. bordercollie

Edit: I like Zoom's idea too. :)

For me, straight to the RTV section is in "Favorites". This is the second item in my list of "go to" sites when I sit down at the puter 3 or 4 times per day. Typically I go to "favorites" go to the first place and check it out and then to here.......NO, honestly, it is a rare day when I go to anyplace else than the RTV forum.

On another forum, Tractor by net, which is 4th on my "favorites", I go to a couple of places on there.........Actually, going there is becoming more and more infrequent as it is becoming loaded with folks that think a "lawn tractor" and a big lawn makes them and their problems interesting. NOT SO..........I guess perhaps, that I am just not "yuppified" enough????????............OR perhaps I don't endorse the way the government is leaning............Anyway, here I am, and as with everything, I shall adapt and improvise.........God bless......Dennis

Yes, I like this idea........ A place to go to, kinda like a reference section in the library. What would be good there, is in the "title", to put an identifier that truly tells what that particular thread is about.............Anyway to alphabitize this or someway put an order to it so that it doesn't become PAGES long?................THANKS FOR WHAT YOU DO, DOC...........God bless........Dennis

I use the "New Posts" feature on Doc's forums.

On other forums where there is a tremendous number of new posts, then I just go to the forums I'm interested in. I hope this makes sense.

Doc, thanks for your interest in helping improve. I have the same comments on the "sticky's" as the others.

Another wish I have is the ability to see attachments without being logged on. I tend to read and listen more than type or speak. As a result, I don't log onto the forum unless there's an attachment to be viewed.

Thanks again!!!

Philip

I never used "New Post" ....
And for getting here, I have it on my favorites list.....
Used the "Search" a fair bit though .....

P.S.

Done wamed up a little bit. And the mean little buggers are out again ....

Hey Phil,
I understand that frustration but it's all about bandwidth. If I show attachments to all guests who outnumber members by the hundreds my bandwidth usage goes way up, which costs me more money to run the forums. So I opt to only allow members to see the attachments. This also entices some guests to join just to see the attachments which then they might even post too. Hey I can always hope. :D

Thanks Doc! Let's not touch that issue. No need to waste money on my behalf.
